I would say it depends. It is 50 / 50 . You either get what you think you get or not. I personally would not want to spend more than I can afford to loose, with the idea that if someone screwed me I am going to fight via all channels...E-bay, paypal or others etc but overall it really just depends to me and the vibe you get from the seller and the reviews they have had.
My freshman year roommate bought a car on ebay. When he showed me the picture of the car that he was bidding on, our campus theater was in the background --- as it ends up the car was on campus, so before the bid ended, my roomate got to meet the student selling it and test drove it etc.
So, he sort of bought the car on ebay, but not like all the way.
Spent like 24k USD on it... dont think I would that much online. Most I ever spent on any type of online purchase was like $200 on some computer hardware.
