Brainstorm about a hypothetical system
 

I've been thinking a lot lately about Linux, Windows, OSX, and the like.

The main problem that I have with Linux is the fact that I can't get the good proprietary apps that I love in a Linux environment. I am left without iTunes, Photoshop, MSOffice, etc, forced to load them in wine, which works well enough, but eats a bit of processor, and sometimes doesn't support what I need.

I realize that OSX is BSD based, which means it has UNIX at its heart. Would this mean that with a bit of work, I could get Linux programs compiling and running on a Mac? and with further work, also desktop environments like KDE and Fluxbox? And, in the end, could i get the things I love in Linux to run on a Mac natively through its UNIX base, while using the OSX ability to run Mac versions of CS5/Office/Games and such natively? I think if I could, I could probably create my dream system with a powerful command line, the software that I love, and a desktop that I can customize to my hearts content.

Any one have any thoughts?

Again, this is just a pipe dream, but do you think its possible?

That's funny, I was just thinking about how every music player for Linux is based on iTunes now, and wondering if mine should have followed the trend.

Why aren't the iTunes-like players for Linux meeting your needs?

Syncing with my iPad/iPod, I like the way it organizes and tags, its easy, integrated iTunes store, etc, etc.

I think the state of the the OSX KDE port tells you everything you need to know.

There's a way to get what you're describing on Windows though.

thats close, but it doesnt really hit the desktop environment. I have a strong dislike for the proprietary "explorer" interface that windows uses, I want to use openbox for the eventual environment for whatever system I end up doing this on.

Have you already looked at MacPorts, Fink and GNU-Darwin?

A bit, thats what set off this idea :p
