Blank screen after installing and updating the Avast antivirus
 

I know i am asking a strange question on list.Well Still i hope for reply .I had no other choice.

I have system with ubuntu and xp installed.I installed and updated avast on xp and then i rebooted the system to xp.After rebooting xp gave the blank screen.My icons,files etc from desktop were passed away.Screen was blank.
I cannot lose my data.Please somebody help to fix it.

The only thing that would make sense, is for you to boot into Linux, mount your Windows partition (if it's not already), and copy the files to Linux and/or CD/DVD/Thumbdrive. What have you done/tried? Have you contacted Avast or Microsoft? Checked their forums?

The standard recovery scenario for something like this is to reboot XP into safe mode, then run the system restore utility to a time prior to your install.

I'd be very concerned about the fact that it was an install of an anti-virus solution that did this, though, because clumsy self-defense against common malware detection software is a common feature of malware. Until you can verify otherwise, I'd consider this system compromised.
