Biggest misconceptions about Linux?
What are some things misinformed people have told you about Linux? I think the most common one is that you can't do nearly as much in Linux as you can in Windows. I've found Linux can do just about anything Windows can.

I was using mostly windows but one day I decided to intall Gentoo and try to not use windows. I was told that it wasn't possible. That there would be always something I had to use windows for.
It was easier than I thought. I havn't booted windows for weeks! :) I also had the misconception that Linux was more stable than windows. I say this because I find XP quite stable and in the last week, my linux installation hanged 3 times :(. It still didn't break windows crash record but... As you can see, I like linux but I'm not a fanatic :D |
A lot of my colleagues (Unix techies) don't realise at all how Linux has progressed in the last few years as a desktop OS and are amazed when they find the user experience isn't quite how it was with KDE v1.

when 'they' tell you windows 'pwns' and linux sucks.... its just plain wrong..
PS: Covel, i havent botted windows in about a year ;) |
Another thing I used to not realize is the fact that you can dual-boot. I always thought it was an either-or situation.

i think the biggest one for most new people trying linux is that its just exactly like windows in every way, shape, and form ............ no wonder they get mad when they have to tell it what to do

I think one of the biggest misconceptions about Linux is that it can replace windows. Let me know how your going to mail your resumes through email without using word...

AbiWord? OpenOffice? They support Microsoft Word extensions don't they? If not, you can run MSOffice under Wine.

yeah I communicate / email / exchange all kinds of documents with windows users, I only use Linux... The only thing is that OpenOffice has a 77 Kb calc file, wich turns out to be 9,6 Mb in excel format, but that's not MY problem, I can always advice people to switch to OpenOffice. When they complain it's too slow, I advice them to switch to Linux :p

I was told, that without having the internet on my pc (didn't have that in the beginning) GNU/Linux would stop working a few days after install.
