big problem! tried a live cd, windows won t start anymore
 

hi there,

got a big problem,

i m a newbie with linux and just started to sort my personal files in windows xp.

yesterday i tried out a linux live cd.

after that windows doesn t want to start anymore.
already tried to make a repair installation and stuff but no success.

i got a knoppix cd which is about 3 months old where i can see that my personal data is still fine.

now i want to copy my personal files to another hard disk and format the former windows hard disk after they are safe.

good time to change my operating system like i planned for a while - but it would be nice to safe personal data before doing so.

to my question - is there a live cd that can copy and write on ntfs partitions - i want to copy my personal data to another ntfs hard disk i have.

is there a linux distribution - live cd / which can copy and write on ntfs????

What did you try - fixmbr ???.
You already have one - Knoppix.
However I would caution against copying to another NTFS partition unless you are going to take that disk to another PC. NTFS is a proprietry format that M$oft keep changing.
Why not FAT32 - even several ???.

Anyway, there is write support, but it's usually described as "experimantal" - and BTW, no longer being developed.
You have been warned - see advice above re FAT32, or use a Linux filesystem.

If your XP system is accessible, Knoppix includes a project called Captive - it uses the drivers from your XP. So from the main menu (the big "K", bottom left), select Knoppix, then (guessing here) utilities, then captive.
Select it, let it scan your disks, go get a beer (mmm - better make that coffee), read a book ....
You should be right to go - maybe you'll have to (re-)mount the target R/W as Knoppix generally mounts all disk as R/O for safety. Not sure how Captive changes things in that respect, as I've never used it, either on Knoppix or elsewhere.

i found another possibility.
theres a distribution from bitdefender called LinuxDefender Live! CD (http://www.bitdefender.com/bd/site/p..._id=25&n_id=58)
which can do that.
