Beta Testers Needed

So this weekend I got kinda bored so I came up with a new web site project for myself. The idea was to start a web site where people can share their basic configuration files with other users. I see a lot of posts on this forum every day that ask for help configuring, Samba, Apache, Postfix, Squid, etc. etc. so I thought it would be cool to setup sort of a database of different conf files.

You can read a little more about what I'm talking about here:
http://www.serversamples.com/about.php

Basically the Register and Login forms work, and registered users have the ability to post new conf files. I've already done the honors of posting the first smb.conf file for people to view and possibly use.

If anyone's interested, please feel free to sign up while I continue to complete the website. The more content the site has the easier it will be to visualize the the different page layouts. Thanks for any/all help!

This is a really nice thing!
Congrats! :D

Hopefully you will have some good content soon. I will try to find some configs to share.

One question, most distributions come with many read-to-use configs, are these accepted? Just in case someone forgets to backup, there could be always a way to get them back.

Thanks for the positive feedback!

Yeah right now anything that works is accepted. Heck even one that don't work will technically be accepted, but the goal is to setup a community rating system so members can rate other memebers' config files.

I realize that just about every linux service comes with extensive readme files, but for beginners some of them can be a little overwhelming. So hopefully this site will be a good alternative for server config docs as well.

yeah honestly thats a kewl idea ... do u plan to also keep kernel config files (u can put them with info like which mobo , what hardware config , it s pitfalls etc) (thats preety much the only config i can give u yet) :( sorry but BEST OF LUCK

msound 06-27-2006 06:14 AM

yeah i definitely plan on expanding on the idea. one of my friends had the idea of also building a config file generator. right now my goal is to finish up the layout and design, finish the members page, get the core of it working well, then i'll figure out what features can be added.

Okiez , would be keeping track of ur website then mate best of luck

I like it! How about other than server configs like others have mentioned? It seems like there's alot of questions that relate to GRUB and LILO configurations, fstab, etc. I second the motion for kernel config files.

Sounds like some great ideas. Thanks for the feedback!

I'll add "General" to the list of Categories and add GRUB, LILO, FStab/Exports, and Crontab to the list of its Sub Categories

Hey just wanted to post an update. The site is still under construction but it's to the point where new users can sign up and post new samples. The search engine isn't up and running yet but I have what should be an adequate drill down menu on the Samples page.

I'm hoping to have the feedback/rating system and "help" functions ready by the end of the week. RSS and the search features should follow shortly after that.

Awesome idea. I will see if I can find my sample for nvidia TV-out and dual monitors. I have saved that file as a backup somewhere ^_^.

Anyway, have you considered using an already finished forum for that? I mean, like phpBB or even a blogger like wordpress? It sounds like a lot of work to create something as you are doing from scratch. If your site gets popular, I hope you are comfortable enough with the basics of security, because there will always be someone trying to hack your site :(.

Either way, good luck with the project. I've bookmarked the link ^_^

Hey thanks for the positive feedback. I'm actually enjoying the hands on php development and I'm definitely trying to pay close attention to security. I'll go ahead and setup a new category for "X" and add subcategories for nvidia and ati. If you have any suggestions for other category/subcategory please let me know.

Looks and sounds good. Is there any way to allow version to also be an optional field for the config file? There aren't a lot of programs that necessarily depend on their config file to be different version to version, but some do (SpamAssassin for example will work with old ones, but as things get moved in and out, conf options also move in and out).

Cool

nice idea and site. i have it book marked and have registerd, just waiting on the confirm e-mail to finish.

Alrighty I've added a category for FTP servers. Right now I have ProFTP and VSFTP under that.

Last night while I was making some changes and moving things around in mysql and I lost part of the IPCop sample. Could the user that posted that sample please re-submit that when you get a chance?

I've modified my backups scripts and I have them scheduled to run more than once a day. Hopefully that will prevent any further loss of data from this point on
