best free backup service/online storage?
I don't know if it's the right section, but I need a (free) backup service. I've never used one. I've installed Windows7 recently and for unknown reasons windows installer wiped my Debian installation. I clearly selected unallocated space but after installation Debian disappeared. I've been very lucky it didn't delete my home partition. Everything I have is there. I had a trust to the hdd as I turned my partitions upside down using gparted and I have never lost anything. So this reminded me how important backup is. I've never made any backups, only burning data that I rarely used to clear hdd. So I'd like to know what services are good for this.

In general, I don't like to trust the internet with my files. I have an external hard drive I back my computer up to. Or you could burn your backup to blue-ray media or DVDs. If you do want to put some files on the internet though Google Drive is nice, and I've heard of people using DropBox. Both services should give you a few gigabytes for free.

I don't feel comfortable with the idea of storing backup data someplace on the internet. This of course would be different if I needed to have access to the files from abroad, without carrying around storage media, but then security would become an issue. I personally use an old PentiumIII box with two large hard drives for backing up data from a few machines, using rsync through my local network: I do backups of entire systems with it, that's a quite simple but reliable solution.

I keep local backups here, and anotehr offsite. I also keep an encrypted backup of some files at SpiderOak. While I like the look of their system I pre-encrypt it anyway before upload.
