Are you talking about the stock Android maps which is google maps? if so that needs the cloud for the map data.
No, 'Maps' is an android program that was on my phone when I got it. It is probably based on Google earth', but has none of the graphics except the roads, and it works with the gps function. I have an American phone without a subscription to any telephone company, but I can use quite a few functions anyway, even in Mexico, and the 'maps' program is a big help traveling off the beaten path in Mexico.
On the Desktop, and laptop, I also use 'Googleearth'. Wish there was something available that would do the same job without connecting to Google.
Same kind of thing here:
At the time I didn’t know enough about computers to check if my system could play a game or about the SLA (Software License Agreement), when I tried to return it they told me people can make copies so they don't do refunds. (Why all the $ecurity then?) Enviably I had to buy a graphics card (got me ) and for some piece of crap warmongering game—because I was young and dumb. I guess we can’t fight the times we’re living in? ...FSF\OCD\TPB\.EDU\Etc..❣ ✌

Quite duplicitous, these companies assert that piracy is illegal and immoral yet they refuse to deal honestly with people who actually buy their products. Why be honest with them?
If (really, it should be 'iff') you're making this statement as a kind of vindication of software piracy, then you're creating a false equivalency in order to build an empty moral high ground for your own standing.
Just because someone or some company does something that you do not like or do not agree with does not make it acceptable to steal from them. Software piracy may be petty theft, but it's theft nonetheless. If you pick the pocket of the grand wizard of the KKK, you're still a thieving pickpocket.
EDIT: That's what makes free software so great, right? It can really be made use of without any lines being crossed.

Yes, so much more enjoyment++ creating our own media.
Point taken but:
@the [MODERATED] i've seen said worse you must be?] if their parents\environment we're of such ignorance then what would be worth stealing?
...now i'm no better than they, oh wate yes I am...

While you have a point, it is not simply a question of a company doing something that I do not like, it is actual theft by them.
If one insists that the consumer be honest that also means that companies must be honest too. So if one pays for something and declines to accept the Terms of Service (TOS), they should be entitled to a refund. Logically, if only one side to a transaction has "rights" the side lacking in "rights" would not have any respect for or feel constrained by the established system.
Furthermore why should the "theft" onus only be publicly directed towards the consumer by industry special interest groups? Some companies themselves are being dishonest and stealing from the consumer, yet they are not being publicly exposed. Instead of the ridiculous public service announcements calling for the consumer to be honest, industry special interest groups should also be publicly calling for companies to treat the consumer honestly and to expose deceptive business practices. Of course that will never happen (Yes, there are some consumer rights groups that do expose a company for bad business practices). Given the current situation, the consumer has been left virtually powerless.

Yes, the stock android maps is Google's map. Google maps and Google earth are very similar and share the same back end data. Google earth is available for Android as well. You can turn on the satellite layer in it as well.
There are plenty of map programs available that don't connect to Google, but you still need to get map data from somewhere. Viking is one you can install on your desktop and uses data from Openstreetmap, MayDryod for the phone.
I've put a request on Garmin's forums a long time ago to make their own android app which can use the maps available for their handheld GPS so you can get a DVD of a whole country and install the maps and be able to use it without a data connection but instead thety released their own garmin phone on the AS&S no coverage network.

The problem is that your argument rests on the premise that the "consumer" is somehow required to purchase the software in question. They are not. You can choose not to get into a business relationship with the publisher of the software, and if you do choose to do business with them, and you don't like how it turns out, you can choose never do business with them again.
By the way, if you don't like the TOS or any other aspect of software which you've just purchased, the onus is on the retailer to return your money.
None of any of that gives anyone the right or the excuse to steal from anyone else. I know that it's very tempting to create this justification in your mind, but if you do then you're fooling yourself.

I never made the statement that the consumer is somehow required to purchase. You are correct to say that no one has an excuse to steal. The point that I am trying to express is that the rules (such as against stealing) need to apply to everyone. If they don't those who are at the losing end won't feel obligated to conform.
I traded an ipud-video (and some sweet mobile speakers—I still miss) for an original ifhone. If I update any\all “apps” they stop working completely, because I was lucky and know what I’m doing I rolled back the apps and put GNU\Linux-(updateable) on it! If they don’t like it fREE-them and their killer ways!!!(.)
Is it our fault we get ripped off, their fault or both? If I go to the store and buy sugar and or fat free snacks (on the front of the box) and (on the back label) is containing sucrose, corn syrup and hydrogenated oils!
Well, I've been using Linux exclusively for a long while now -- several years. And I don't intend to quit. But my darlin' wants to watch specific TV shows on the computer when we are in Mexico. Turns out that they require you to use windows (or Mac, or Android, or I-whatever - in short anything but linux), so I decided to install windows on the first partition of my drive, on both a laptop, and a destop. So used Gparted to size and format the partition to fat32, I also (tried ntsf; and not formatting it).
Guess what! Windows will not install. Or if it does, it lack serious adjustability (such as not being able to use Wifi). But mostly, it just will not install. It goes through the motions until it gets to its first "boot into windows" screen, and then the screen goes blue, with white letters saying that it ran into "serioous problems, and can't continue" so it stopped "to avoid damage to your hardware", and then there is the word "Stop" followed by a long string of numbers and letters.
Windows help pages list any number of things that one might try to get it straightened out, but mostly they make it sound like it's the hardwares fault. Meanwhile Several versions of Linux work just fine on the same hardware.
But I'm about to stop trying, but if anyhone has worked tthrough this foolishness once or twice, or knows of a good program or website, or tutorial about it, I'd appreciate it.
I can probably still install xp in Vbox, and get the same results???

Sounds like it IS installed.... That's just the Windows "works"!

They must like you! They usually try to tell you that it's a virus! Windows tech support class is only 15 minutes long- You're taught how to say "Reboot your computer"; "Run an antivirus scan" and "It must be your hardware", in an unintelligible foreign accent that no one can understand, except "Apu" from The Simpsons.
(There's only one program I can't use since going exclusively Linux- e-Sword -so I just got some books that accomplish the same thing the old fashioned way. See? There you go; tell Darlin' to read a book!
I'm going to try xp in Vbox for HULU but mostly to see if it will work for you littlejoe5 and will post back tonight or tomorrow not to mention how fun it will be DELETING it (>‿◠)✌
Don'tt know what variety of Linux you are using. but e-Sword is available in different forms and different names for most of them. in the Debian (and derivative) fam ilies, there is Xiphos (for gnome) and I think KDE calls theres Kbible, or something like that. Then for Aandroid there a really superb program based on (but not exactly) e-sword. It's called MySword. There are multiple versions available for all of these, and they are all free in every sense that linux is free. Look them up on the internet, or in your repositories, under the heaeding "sword" or "Bible". I had the same problem with Linux until I began to ask questions.
