Backward compatibility

is linux backwards compatible with programs? If i were to install a package for slackware 8.0 on slackware 9.0 will it work or do i have to get the packages for that specific version number?

Depends on the program - most (if not all) of the programs for 8.0 will now have a version for 9.0. What program are you thinking of?

Quite possibly - without trying it I couldn't say. Check for a newer version in www.linuxpackages.net

Backward compatabillity is always possible in Linux.
You may need to DL and install some older libraries to make it work in some cases , but it's certainly possible.
If you're on that road , compiling from source is the best course of action , since "./configure" will tell you exactly which libraries/other programs you need.
