automatic downloads?
 

I had a hard time placing this discussion so dont get angry if its in the wrong place.

I was just wondering if there is any linux distrubition that can automatically download things off the internet. Going throught the process of the termnial with the code is difficult enough. I must have been through 5 distrubitions already and nothing.

Now i know the downloads i get have to be linux compatible and they are.
Just wondering if there are any that can unpackage, decompress, download and all that stuff with one click of a button.

Why click of a button? You can setup Fedora to download and update itself via yum. Other distributions can be just as easy depending on what your using as your package software and such.

I use Slackware and I have cron scripts that pull the latest packages each week. Whenever I want to upgrade, all I have to do is go into the directory I download the packages to and do a upgradepkg *.tgz

If I want to be choosy, I'll just select individual packages... and if I really wanted to, I could just setup a cron job to do it all for me, but I rather not since new packages could end up breaking my system or incompatible with other things I have installed, etc.

yes i know how to update my system. (i figured out a few weeks ago and had like 1000 new packages and updates). There are lots of programs that are not included in the updates tho that you download of the net. Just wondering if there was a system that when you go to the website and click download that it would actually download, saving you the trouble of unpackageing and all that crap with all those codes that give me a headache.
Like when you goto a sie while running Windows. One click. Easy.

Redhat has this, if your willing to pay for it. Don't know any others that are setup like Windows though, they're all third party tools to download and update.

all right! Here is the thing. I need a new compy. If you buy a linux from an, lets say from IBM, store does it come with the auto download. What do you recommend. Or are there other linux systems that do this.

Apt-get - Debian, Fedora, SuSE, Slackware (Slapt-Get), Mandriva
Urpmi - Mandriva
YUM - Fedora
YAST - SuSE
Swaret - Slackware
Postage - Gentoo

All the above will download software and resolve dependencies. They have GUI frontends or you can type commands in the terminal.

If you mean software that will anticipate your needs and do downloads without your intervention, well that's called Malware and is only found in Windows.

ok yum for me. What do you mean gui frontends?

A gui frontend is a gui which will allow to to do most of the console commands via point and click.

and how to you get to the point and click screen? (probably a noobish question) First you download the download to the web browser then you find the gui frontend? how does this work.

You download the program (for Slackware, using Swaret it would be KSwaret, for example) then you install it, then you use it.
