sir bill gates - what he do to deserve that?

just wanted to apologise for the british government/queen who has decided to make
billy gates into Sir billy gates.
i'm not sure whether they are knighting him for:
a) holding corporate earth to ransom
b) stealing other peoples ideas
c) introducing the world to blue screens of death
d) making the worlds worst, most problem laden product ever
e) being even richer than the queen
f) all of the above

hangs head in despair
wishes there was a continent as yet uninhabited

realises it's just too late

Presenting...Sir Crashalot

ps: technically, BG can't use the Sir title, as he isn't a UK citiizen.

Arise Sir Bill

Well, it had to happen - our wonderful governmnet has granted Bill Gates an honoury knighthood - Sir Bill Gates :) A meal at the feeding trough is guaranteed for the foreseeable future to all those involved. That's todays' news over.

UltimaGuy 01-26-2004 02:23 AM

I think this should be in the -General- forum...

Looking_Lost 01-26-2004 02:28 AM

Oops - your right - I keep doing that for some reason. :)

UltimaGuy 01-26-2004 02:28 AM

So bill gates is becoming Sir bill gates ah.........

salparadise, there is no need to apologize as these are political issues and there is nothing that we can do about it!

UltimaGuy 01-26-2004 03:08 AM

Try to remember that before you post from now on..........;)

ugenn 01-26-2004 03:47 AM

he would be Bill Gates KBE at best. The 'Sir' title is reserved only for knighted UK citizens.

hmm
a few thoughts

Knighting Gates is a political move by Gordon Brown.
The title has pretty much no meaning in a modern society.
I am sure it will grease a few wheels between Gates and the public and private IT industry in UK.
It is impossible to publicly attack the decision because of Gates' charity fund.

However what I personal believe goes unsaid
There is a school of thought that you should not brag about giving to charity as Gates does because it devalues the act and can be used for personal gain.
Its great that people like Gates do give to charity, but I do not believe that they should make it public.
There are plenty of people who give far more to charity than Gates ever could, not in monetary terms, but in personal terms, and these people will always go unnoticed.

Personally as a British citizen I do no recognise his Knighthood, but then that is irrelevant.

I don't really get why a government committed to using open source software would want to knight Bill Gates? Trying to get a discount on MS licence fees?
