Careful here. Windows Update uses IE and will not work any other way. It uses Activex.

Untested idea: You could replace iexplore.exe by, say, firefox.exe, renamed to iexplore.exe. That way progs hardcoded to start IE will start Firefox whereas those that use the IE engine should still work.

I'll make sure that IE doesn't get completly killed
