anyone really ever make a substantial amount of money online?
just wondering if anyone has really made online on something other than ebay. im on the computer 24/7 and am thinking of different ways i can make some cash on the side...any ideas
Sell porn. It's a joke, but I think the only way to make money on the internet is by offering something a lot! of people want. Getting them to pay for services or products is the hard part, but the other alternative, online advertising, doesn't do much for small sites.
p.s. Don't start a linux site with Google's Adsense
Because it will show links to Microsoft's "Get the FUD" compaign, instead of pertinent Linux links. jeremy has taken great care to assure that doesn't happen on this site, in case you were wondering.

Slippy quietly off-topic, he said: Naive question--with adsense, you have no control over the ads that get placed on your site??

Thanks for the answer. I really didn't know anything about all this.
I've been mostly making my living through on-line sales since 1996. It comes and goes, but it's true that you have the best chance of success by selling something. Not by selling a service, and, I think, not by selling your next-door-neighbor's junk.

Hmm, has anyone ever made money online? Let me think. . .
You can do well online, but it's only going to be slightly less expensive than a brick & mortar business.
Don't forget Mark Cuban's (Dallas Mavericks Owner) who started www.broadcast.com and sold it to Yahoo for like 5.4 Billion dollars. What does Yahoo do in return, ruins the site and it now just redirects to www.yahoo.com; so they basically spent 5.4 Billion for a redirect that anyone can get with any domain register for free in most cases after registering a domain.
That should go into the category of biggest online flops made by stupid companies..
Watching the recent Winter Olympics a great deal of mention was made of the Australian athelete that was "a millionaire". Turns out he really is a multi-millionaire, having made his fortune as down-under's Spam King.
And if your goal is to make money, not how you do it - then porn is not a joke.
You asked if you could make money at it, not if I thought it was a good idea.
