Any PROFESSIONAL music being made with F/LOSS?

An musical acquaintance of mine was complaining about being trapped in proprietary software upgrade cycle, and how it was easier to torrent a cracked version of the software than it was to deal with all its licensing 'protections.'

I mentioned, for his consideration, how I produce my music completely with F/LOSS software, and he became highly insulted, saying nothing compares to "pro" software, and that F/LOSS audio tools were 'geek toys.' Eh, whatev's.

I've always been of the opinion that the only real requirement to making good music is to be a good musician, regardless of what you pay for your tools. But what if he's right? Are there any professional (however that's defined) recording artists (any genre) that exclusively, or mostly, use F/LOSS tools? If not, why not?
