I'm not 100% sure what you are asking but listening to TechSNAP (Jupiter Broadcasting) I hear the following names a lot DenyHosts, SSHGuard or Fail2Ban. Hopefully these will get you on the right track.

I am not surprised; the utilities quoted have an obvious application against a DoS, but it is less clear how useful they may be against a true DDoS (they may be no help whatsoever against a botnet attack, where every botnet member is used only once, but a lot more help if the owner of the botnet has been sloppier with node re-use).
As to the original question about anti-DDoS services, I can't really see how they work, so I suspect that they are mostly selling snake oil. Well, unless the service that they offer is to offload from you the task of talking to your upstream supplier, when the worst happens and you have reasons to be rather busy. I don't think that most people think that is what they are buying.
Cloud DDoS Protection seems to be an effective way of mitigating these attacks - at least for now. What happens is that "they" take all of your traffic, clean it and let you have only legit traffic. This kind of protection is often referred to as "Proxy Shield DDoS Protection".
Finding good DDoS protection is tricky. Prolexic is the obvious leader, you need a serious budget there though. From the other guys: blockdos, blacklotus, vistnet, dragonara, etc. - they are all have their good and bad sides. Blockdos, for example, is a reseller, thus providing the best combination when needed, but could also be quite costly. Vistnet and Dragonara have their own solutions and are pretty decent for the money - the latter suffering from serious support issues, takes 10 hours for a response. Vistnet, on the other hand, have much better support, but do not protect game servers and have issues with streaming services.
