I think just about every XP user has some security risks but aside from that, linux is just a better system to use (e.g., highly tweakable) and after any computer literate person spends a little time with the right distro, Slack in particular, it's hard to find any use for Windows.
In Windows there seems to be very little actual control of the system. In linux it's the total opposite plus linux is a constant project that lets us all learn more and more about how things actually work and how to make them work better.
Most of all, it's fun!!! Windows took the fun out of computing, in my opinion.
You shouldn't be switching just for security anyway, because ultimately you'll be disappointed, you can't tell if something is more secure all the time you're not getting attacked, you can only tell when things are /less/ secure
Well, there's always the ideological reason.... Open Source just seems right to me. It encompasses my feelings about liberties and freedoms about as perfectly as any software model can
i'm a winxp user AND a slack10 user. i've never had security problems w/linux, while the last yr i got two viruses on windows which didn't even allow me to connect to the internet and a virus which changed my internet connection pw. so what are you axactly talking about when you say "no security problems for a winxp user"?
and as a slack10 user i must say that, yes, it's fun! windows got so boring...
btw: i use windows only b/c the adsl modem i have works only on windows. i use that machine only as a gateway and i'm planning to get rid of it once for all.
I just found out about the cool factor
the wan link on my adsl connection went down
and I called to report it when the person asked about my O/S
I sed slack 10 linux and she sed "linux cooooool I've ben wanting
to try it but just haven't gotten around to it " being a slacker I tould
her to try vector linux (an easy to install slack)
I use both Win XP and Slack on my system as well.....I don't have security issues with windows maybe a few bad cookies but thats about it.
Anyways Linux is super more customizable then windows. And its certainly mroe fun IMO to use. But a reason to migrate to linux? For the average Joe there is little value right now IMO especially since he more or less alreayd has windows preinstalled.
