AMD buys out ATI, is this good or bad for Linux?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/5210276.stm

with the pathetic driver support from ATI and the good support for linux from AMD, or so i perceive it, will this be good or bad for Linux?

will AMD start to release better ATI drivers for Linux, or will they pull back on their chipset and CPU support.

discuss.

It's hard to tell. I thought this article was pretty interesting: http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=33219

If the author is right, then we probably won't really see the impact of the merger, errr acquisition until late 2007. It sounds like a lot of the focus will be on improving AMD's tech. I doubt a lot of focus will be put on ATI's gpu's and linux drivers.

Not saying that I don't look forward to it, but it seems unlikely. ATI and Nvidia both have a stronghold on the graphics market. Ati has a deathgrip on its specifications and other related IP issues. As tigh-necked as they are, you would think they were selling high-profile cryptographic devices. AMD buying Ati? Sure, they're both 3 letter names that start with A. But this sounds about likely as Intel buying Nvidia.
