Am i weird or just smart for my age?

All the other 14 year olds i know just stick around with facebook and those photo editors that add text and some other stuff.

But i want to learn c++ , learn about linux, want to work to buy an android tablet , learn more than i already know to use photoshop .. Shouldn't this be stuff i should want when i'd be 16-18 or so ?

I have many friends of my age or younger and play soccer with them and go to the movies with my gf but when i come home my "darkside" comes out... is this weird?

You're far better off than I was at your age.

You are doing very well to be able to both develop your expertise in these very useful and practical subjects and to simultaneously maintain your relationships with your friends and significant other.

By the sounds (or should I say sight) of it you are mature for your age. Nothing weird in that as long as you have a healthy balance of "work-rest" 'learning-playing" etc.

You are not only weird, but a menace to society.

Over the years I've often been surprised at the intelligence and knowledge shown by some youngsters out there. Two in particular come to mind who impressed me most. They were both aged 12 -14 and were both girls. Maybe it's indicative of girls maturing mentally more quickly than boys. Anyway, the first joined a forum I was a member of many many years ago for Amiga users, that diversified as the Amiga lost appeal. She would often appear having just completed some monumental repair and maintenance routine on a Windows 98 system, and when she turned her attention to general chit chat she demonstrated more maturity and tolerance than most people older than her.

The second was only a few months ago in the Linux Mint IRC channels, and from being a complete Linux novice she picked up and rapidly overtook many others who had been using Linux for a year or two.

I suspect that both of them shared your outlook, in that whilst it's fine to have fun just like anyone else, there's no harm in letting your inner geek out once you get home.

Not any weirder than a online Linux friend of mine whose 7 year old daughter compiled and installed her own Linux kernel during her own Linux crux 2.7 install. With Dads help of course.

Of course, when trolls give you the "Linux is not for the average user!" line, what they're really saying is that you're abnormal and that there's something wrong with you.

everybody is weird to some extend

my hobby as a youngster was electronics. I bought those 60/100/200/300 electronic in-one project kits at radio shack and other kits at heathkit. Not sure if heathkit is around anymore.

we used to go to the tip and scrounge old TVs and radios for parts
my brothers used to take their rifles and shoot rats

I have a son who is weather mad
so he wants to be a meteorologist
takes fotos and vids of storms

don't compare yourself to a generation of meatheads who want to slobber in front of the TV or facebook

Same here.

You're not at all weird compared to me. Just do what you like to do.

My advice is to listen to yourself most of all. Others will try to change you, to force you to be like them. Resist, be like you want to be.

Worthwhile advice, but as a counterpoint I offer this. Do your best to maintain healthy relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. You have no idea how much you depend on them until you lose them.

I agree with that too. It's walking a fine line between what they want (and will maintain a good relationship) and what you want.
