I read about spyware on the web. That must have been what happened to my M$crosoft ME! It was slow, and then it coughed, huffed, and puffed. It would not install from cd. How could spyware do this? How do I know that I will not have any spyware on my PC when I get it to work with Linux? This Linux is new to me.
Additional sigs:
You understand what "there's no place like 127.0.0.1" means.
You under stand what "there are 10 kinds of people in the world: those who understand binary and those who don't" means.
Including these two sigs, I'm guilty of 11 of 17.
I could also add this:
You tell people who annoy you "go away or I will replace you with a very small shell script".

Linus T. released the OS as open-source, he doesn't directly make ANY money from it, I'm sure people donate tho, either time or money. I would say it's blasphemy to use Gates and Linus in the same sentence. I would even say it's blasphemy not to use Gate$ instead of Gates, and M$, and Window$, Vi$ta, and everything that has to do with them must be branded with a $, because that's the ONLY thing they care about and will ever care about. You may find it silly, but the world is much more silly, which overrules this.
As for spyware, it is possible to get it, mostly in the form of a rootkit, in which case you should use: http://www.chkrootkit.org/
Really, I've never gotten one, and if you follow good procedure, you won't either. Especially, do NOT run as root, have a separate account, and have a password on every account, people come from Window$ with the idea that this is a great idea. No, it's not, it's madness.
It may also be possible if you run many things through wine ... which you shouldn't be doing anyway. Run things on wine only if there aren't FLOSS replacements that are good enough.

I'm guilty of 7 out of 8... I guess im getting there! lol my friend wanted to install a DVD burner software and I installed Suse 10.3 instead! now he is hooked to linux!
What is FLOSS? My parents would always tell me to floss. I think you mean something different.
Free Libre Open Source Software. As you might already know, free does not mean free. Just apply for a credit card, or a loan, or download a freeware program. The word free has no business here, but it has been bastardized by politicians and businessmen and governments everywhere to attract many flies into a trap. I'm sure Stallman suggested this term of FLOSS, it's easy to remember and it stands for something which cannot be mistaken. The word 'libre' is used as it has not yet been bastardized. You can also use FOSS, whatever.

It's not a good idea on any OS. You can easily destroy your system as root or admin. Imagine a badly designed program, it could very easily ruin your system if given root privileges, one example is wine. Running a user without a password should be obvious ... I mean, I could log in too you know, right now in fact on your machine if it doesn't have a password. And other reasons too. Just make a user account. This is harder on Window$ because in order to install anything you'd have to log in and out again, or maybe there's a better way, I don't know and I don't care cuz I ain't using it ever again.
You know yor a linux addict when aften years of using microsoft products you wince in dsicust every time some one in the same room mentions that they spent an inorinate some of money upon a new computer just to run Windows Vista (FISTA).
