Hi Baja!
Besides the above, have you considered a different distro? You seem to be having a good time with RH, but I'm thinking maybe you should look at one of the distros that have things like apt by default: Debian (apt) Xandros (apt) Mandrake (urpmi) Gentoo (Portage) Arch (apt-like pacman) Just an idea, I've noticed a fair amount of questions revolving around dependencies. Cool |
dropline gnome for slack installs it for you.
|
oh I was where you are. Installed about 8 rpm's so I could install xine, then tried the xine rpm and found 2 more dependencies, those of which required about 4 under each and it just went on. i just gave up.
is synaptic apt-get? trinity |
Synaptic is just a type of frontend for apt-get.
Some people find it easier to use than the plain command line. |
Summary: Graphical package management program using apt.
Synaptic (previously known as raptor) is a graphical package management program for apt. It provides the same features as the apt-get command line utility with a GUI front-end based on Gtk+ |
thanks for the answers :). I didn't mean to threadjack, its just that Jamd came with synaptic and everyone always talks about apt-get and I was wondering if the two were related.

Thats ok about the threadjack I didnt really have a question anyway i just needed to vent:D
What is apt? and please dont say apartment lol. |
apt-get is the debian package manager. It automatically tries to solve dependancies
so if you apt-get install kdebase on a console only system it will try to install all its dependancies including all of X etc.. It will even try to set everthing up. |
Maybe theres something wrong with me or my system cuz when i tried to install the apt it did nothing when i clicked on it and just hangs at the console when i type " rpm -ivh apt-0.5.5cnc6-fr1.i386.rpm "
It just sits and the cursor blinks and i have no more console control. anything i type dosnt work. |
RedHat is what, 6 or 7 cd's? You'd think it would be in there.
Switch to Slackware and d/l dropline gnome. |
I'll tell you what....
If you install Windows XP Pro, then you can just double click on exe files to run the setup. Works like a champ :D NO muss no fuss.... |
I use only the first 3 cds of RH and don't have any major problems with it. Apt does work with RH.
|
Except in windows, you're getting nothing but precompiled binaries :)
I use apt-get rarely, but mostly just install from source... Other times, I'll used the precompiled slack binaries. That way I get an application that's compiled under my system, specifically FOR my system.. The performance advantages can be dramatic :-D -Shade |
