Although I do think a lot of Windows' crashing is down to being careless at using it. For comparison, my PC doesn't crash THAT much using windows (being reasonable). The family PC in the other room is so full of spyware, viruses (like MSBlast recently, which I had to get rid of) and other crap it takes about 5 minutes to load AFTER booting up.
this is just what i'm talking, people don't have a choice? They CAN'T go to the store and buy a MAC? Wow, you learn something new everyday
The reason people don't use linux that often is because the average person has no NEED for it
By the way, I went to Best Buy, and I made a choice to buy SuSE Linux
first of all, why are you offended by the fact that I put a space in your name, I assure you that it wasn't a grand scheme to piss you off.
second, my use of the word "gayer" was signifying that i think using the word gay as stupid is an inappropriate use

Did you not read my post? Email me if you want to argue against my moderation of your post.
oh yes, yes darthtux, i am so stupid. i guess i can't be as cool as you because I didn't download it off the internet. did it ever occur in your pathetic attempts to act elite to me that maybe part of the reason that I bought it was to support open source software
but im sure it didn't because you are probably to busy insulting people who use kde, making yourself look smart, and making fun of people for no reason whatsoever so maybe you should shut your mouth and stop being a stupid 1337 hax0rz111111!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111

I think it's more fair to say that most people don't really know that there is a need for it. The majority of computer users don't understand that a good chunk of their PC's price is tied up in the OS. If it were a choice between "user-friendly" MS Windows and Linux on a balanced playing field, it would be a different story. For example, you went to purchase a computer, and they asked which OS you'd like. MS windows was whatever price plus "addon" software like Office and so on. Linux was whatever price, including Staroffice/Openoffice, Apache, compilers and IDEs, etc. What would the "need" be then?
You're right, however. The average person has no need for Linux. The reason is that they have no choice in matter, unless they're willing to invest time to look for alternatives. Most people aren't, and you can't blame everybody for not wanting to invest hours and hours in computer knowledge.
Originally posted by unimaginative i just can't stand people who think they are better than someone for such a petty reason as buying linux from a store
it was quite obvious the point of the "did it come pre-installed" statement was to ridicule me
Still gives you no reason to personally attack another member which can cause a thread to be closed in an instant in some cases. I saw his post as a simple question, in which an easy yes or no could have been the reply, not a personal attack.
And scott_R,
I totally agree with you on the investing hours and hours into computers. Some just want to buy one, take it home, boot it up and it instantly work for them. They can care less how it works, etc.

You're kidding, right? Haven't you seen protests against these kinds of comments? As soon as you wrote "gayer", you opened yourself up against the PC crowd (and those who don't want LQ patroled by the PC police). Curiously enough, not one poster has posted that they've been offended by your remark, it's been the moderators and others that have stood up against it. Not that the moderators are PC police, but nobody wants LQ to be seen as an offensive site.
Nobody is trying to tick you off unimaginative, these comments are simply suggestions. Bite the bullet, relax, and let it die. You (and the rest of us) will be a better person for it, and it won't waste the bandwidth.

You're way off base. You said you bought suse from best buy like saying you could buy it there how dare anyone say they have a monopoly. My statement was to emphasize the fact that you can't buy Linux pre-installed. So do you think an average customer is going to go over to the OS isle and look at Linux? No. They are going to just look at the computers that have nothing else but windows preinstalled.

Okay, this is my last post on the subject. Unimaginative, nobody is trying to ridicule you. This site is set up to help people, whether that is directly, with Linux challenges, or indirectly, with questions that only involve Linux user's interests. That's it, period.
These threads are as out of hand as the "which distro is for me?" ones.
And I have only been here for a month or 2.
Wait, did you hear that Microsoft is creating a version of Li...
j/k
Oh and BTW, something that just irked me.

Fine, but then you may never eat at McDonald's, By a General Motors car, use your local cable provider, or even have power. (some of this might not apply to Europeans as our industries are different.) There are plenty of monopolies, so why not boycott them all.
All of these are not monopoly's except one....cable providers, well, ok power may be too, except in Texas and California. Anyway, when you go to any resturant you are not handed a menu that is 90% McDonalds food, or in some cases all McDonalds food. When you order your dinner at a resturant you are not told told that you are going to get a Big Mac and Frys with your steak dinner, you are going to have to pay for them wheather you eat them or not, and there is nothing you can do about it. Driving down the street all or 90% of the resturants are not Mcdonalds. And the the same goes for car dealers, when you go to buy a car you are not told you will have to pay $60k but you are only buying the shell of the Viper, every car comes with a Cavalier (GM) engine and again, there is nothing you can do about it. For Monopolys see Micro$oft, cable companies, and the game of the same name.
But the general idea you are trying to convey is correct. We vote with our dollar. And right now more people are voting for M$, just as in politics some people vote for the projected winner, or or for one party just to keep the other party from winning instead of voting their mind or for what makes them the most comfortable. I for one have made the switched and voted for Linux. I have done my part, and I will help others when they are ready to cast their votes, but its up to them.
