it does take money to get things
Umm, things aren't free in the world. If you want, then you develop a distro that is totally free, mass producing the cd's with manuals, providing technical support, and give to everyone for free at all times, see how long your distro lasts.
And to set the record straight, LQ will always be free, its your choice to make a ( the keyword is ) CONTRIBUTION, to help keep the site up and running. Its not free to even host a site, hardware upkeep, and any other charges that come along.
So your complaint really pisses me off. Linux isn't free as in free beer, its free as in freedom, your giving the source as with most other open source GPL software. Read a little more before you start complaining and pick up a economics books on how to run a business.
You interpret free wrong - it is not free as in beer, it is free as in speech, and remember when you buy a distro you are not buying CD's only, you are buying tech support as well, even if it is for a limited time only.
aye... i finally succumb to telling people to rtfm... . understand it first skahla... no one promised free as in price-free. gnu only promised free as in freedom.
and uh... economics books only tell you lies... to learn how to run a business, search elsewhere...
i am not pissed though, so don't read it that way ok?
Well, i think this is the first time I have seen Trickmiester angry.
But while I am not really angry, I do think you stepped over the line comparing Linux and linuxquestions.org to an "evil empire".
I would suggest that you research a topic better before actually complaining about it, because it makes yuou look like an ass. And you really should watch what you say and how you say it, as you can offend people.
if you're really looking for a way to rid yourself of the evils of things that cost $$, then i suggest getting rid of the computer to start with, not to mention the phone line, electricity, ect...
everything costs something, whether it's thought, material, or labor. money just represents a trade-off between those three. here, you're getting the benefit of our collective experience at only the cost of clicking and reading. if you think you're getting ripped off, then you're free to go elsewhere.

There was this other time it happened, long ago in a post not so very far away. Anyone can find it, I'll give them a dollar..
I'm not truly pissed, I'm more pissed about the comment about LQ and charging people cause its untrue in everyway.
And who cares if people charge for Linux, your helping support a great OS or Company, they can't just magically make things appear to give away, it costs resources and time, which in turn costs money.
The Redhat Enterprise edition is a helluva lot cheaper than any MS License plan out there.
Suse doesn't give out iso but you can still download it.
Mandrake, its a big 5 dollars a month for a year.. come on, that's a pack of cigarettes to join if you want to help support them.
And the big one, Linux as a free OS, it is free actually. Do you understand that Linux is only the kernel, not everything else that comes along packaged with all these distro's. So technically it is free.
Oh well, I'm done now, people shouldn't make stupid complaints about stupid topics that aren't true in many aspects.

Fin wins.. Yeah, actually now that I've reread it.. I didn't seem to angry, maybe at the time I was saying more things to myself and keeping myself from saying things on the posts..
How would you like that ? Here's what I got, so you tell me how you want your dollar ?
1 Quarter
4 Dimes
6 Nickels
4 Pennies
I am 1 penny short, but I think I have a Wrigley's Spearmint that could compensate it.
I doubted that was it. Geez man, Kewp spews more bile on posts where he actually thinks the question has merit. That one was just mild frustration. Kinda like the frustration I just went through trying to hang a printed copy of the history of Unix (linked off of MasterC's sig, thanks!), accross my new cube. All but the first page fit! Gah!
Anyway Trick, you should have known not to challenge a library clerk to use a search engine. It was really kind of easy:
Limit by user: Trickykid
keyword: angry
Show list by posts (makes scanning through them easier)
That brings back 2 threads, the Debian v. Slackware one, and this one... the only two instances of you having typed the word "angry", weird eh?
Hold on to the dollar, you've got the coffee the next time I'm in Austin. Of course, the last time was 1995 when I stopped briefly at one of your lovely gas stations.
Cheers,
Finegan
P.S.
Oddly enough this thread is only the third time I've ever typed "angry" into a post. Meanwhile I've used "kazoo" 32 times...
Of course, I'm never as introspective as to write: "this makes me angry", instead I'd just call the guy a @#$!face, or a @#!$@#!#*er, or maybe even a @#&(*!&#&@!^^#$!!#@&!&@#**!#@*^$^@@!*!-windows-!*&^#@!^#@!*&*!@&*#@!&*&#@!&*$@!(@(!@#!&@*#^!@
Trick, I know that your offer of a dollar was not sincere (please tell me it wasn't), but just out of curiosity, how much would it cost to send Fin that dollar (presuming it'd be just a single dollar bill) in the post?
(I know it's an odd question, I just find thing like this interesting, from time to time).
