What...is the question, exactly?

I think this might be better in software, since it seems like you are having problems with some sort of encryption application? You however are not even clear what this software is, or what OS you are even using, for that matter.

So either

a) You''re doing something you're not supposed to and the admin is doing his job. In this case you are asking for help to do something against the rules.

b). Your admin is a jacka** and doing something (s)he shouldn't be doing. LQ.org can try to help with your data recovery, but you probably ought to complain to your management. Especially if you have evidence.

Arow's observations are spot-on. The network admin has the right and responsibility to do what it takes to keep the network in good shape. That probably includes taking a look at any suspicious files. For all we know you are the subject of an investigation that management knows about. Also, it's highly unlikely that the company would be too excited about hosting encrypted files, if they don't have the key.

If you have evidence that the netadmin is working against the best company's best interests (as opposed to yours) discuss it with your supervisor. More than likely, the intrusion was just the netadmin backing up your database.

I could barely figure out what his question was regarding, and we have already decided there is some inter-office politics coming into play?

Is he trying to say the network administrator actually broke into his computer and destroyed all of his work?

Of course, even if that is the case, that is no business of ours and doesn't have anything to do with the problem at hand. The only concern we should have here is figuring out what his problem is and helping him get through it, anything else is best left for a different forum.

I disagee. If it involves office property or procedures or any legal issues, we need to keep out of it altogether. OTOH, if he had posted it simply as a technical issue, rather than appearing to be trying to do something behind the admin's back, I'd agree with you.

Obviously if he is trying to do something inappropriate nobody here is going to aid him with that, at least not intentionally.

But honestly, I can't even make out what he is asking us, let alone determine that he is trying to do something illegal/inappropriate. I think the best bet would be to just wait for him to come back and (hopefully) explain himself better, rather than everyone jumping to conclusions about what his ulterior motives are.

Sounds like he used some demo encrypting software then removed it to install a Full version of the commercial encrypting program and can't access his data.

Which if this is the case I would refer him to Tech support for the commercial product..

but since he 'found' the full version it's not likely he's entitled to support from the software publisher..

Ok all of you are rigth but I also think that somebody should help him.

I don't know much about such things but I read an article about "data rescue".
Fazit:You can rescue everything but you have to pay for it...there are a few companies specialized for these things!

"but since he 'found' the full version it's not likely he's entitled to support from the software publisher.."

And even if his actions are completely benign, he's probably made himself much worse off by installing at least 2 unauthorized software packages, one of which may have been stolen.

Sorry if I'm annoying a few of you with my stance on this. When I was working as a programmer I saw 2 of my colleagues escorted out of the building and fired "With Cause" due to data security violations. It's best to educate people up-front that they need to go through proper channels if they're in a work environment.

Nope, strong encryption + lost key/password = doomed dude.

In case the key was 8 bytes or more it's hopeless.

Well, the worst of it is that this is not a Windows XP help forum. We do Linux here. Sorry. There should be plenty of Microsoft forums for you to get help on. Google would be your best friend in finding one for you.
