* i only reboot after compiling a new kernel (~ every 6 month)
* i only shutdown the pc when i am moving to a new appartment(every year).

i got used to my computer noise so it doesn't bother me when sleeping. When i am not alone, i just put the music on :-).

Lucky folks.

Out here in India, we mostly power off "personal" and home computers to avoid backup battery drain during unplanned power shutdown, (Though it is mostly OK in my town).

At work it would be different, backups, disaster recovery plans, the works.

I leave both my computers on (Slackware 10 and Win2kPro)
because right now I'm troubleshooting an iptables problem. After I resolve tha, they'll both stay on still, I'll just be running a seti@home cluster.
