In spanish the jacket itself is called a 'smoking'!
I'm still waiting to see if Bush decalres a state of emergency in order to stick around and inflict still more damage. When he was nominated as the republican candidate in 1999, I predicted that he would be the last President of the US. Said prediction seems to have been pretty close on the mark...
Riiiiight. He got elected, then re-elected. "Close to the mark..."
I don't know who else watched the VP debates last night, especially those across the pond who were actually crazy enough to stay up and watch, but all I know is I lost count how many times Palin kept saying 'nucular' instead of nuclear. What a dumb bitch. (I won't take that back).
I grew up saying "warsh" instead of "wash". It is how my mother said it; I learned it from her. Does that make me dumb?
In the south "you all" is often heard even though proper grammar is "you" - which leads to ambiguities in singular vs plural. Are people from the south all dumb?
Raise your hands now: how many people here use the teeth-grating non-word "irregardless"? If you do, then you ARE dumb. And I'll bet that an awful lot of people reading this are guilty.
One major concern I have is the whole "My team" mentality. Most, not all, but most Americans tend to vote for one party or the other, regardless of their actual beliefs. What I mean is, if a person considers themselves a democrat, they will vote for the democrat, without any consideration for anyone else who may be more qualified. And the politicians will disregard their own beliefs simply because their "party" takes a stance to own side or the other on an issue. I don't want to pick a red shirt or a blue shirt. I want to pick the one that fits best, regardless of which "team/party" they're from. Also, get rid of lobbyists. It's the very definition of government corruption in my book...
Even worse, those who use the "my team" mentality very often lack the intelligence to even specify WHY. Further, because "my team" is right, anyone not on "my team" is automatically wrong. Even better, since they are wrong, they are stupid. Since, clearly, the members of "my team" are the only enlightened and intelligent ones around.
And, finally, since I and "my team" are the enlightened and intelligent ones, it is our DUTY - our DUTY, I TELL YOU - to drag all of these unintelligent morons who don't believe as we do to the light. To this end, any action is justified. We can suppress their speech. We can routinely denigrate them. We can pass laws to prevent them from living their lives as they choose.
And it is right that we do this, because we are the intelligent and enlightened ones.
Of course, the objective fact is that all idealogues - anyone who fits this pattern to any significant degree - are stupid people who lack the intelligence to understand and question their own beliefs, who lack the perspective to even consider the possibility that they might be wrong, or alternatively, that those who do not believe as they do may be as right as they are, and who lack the balance to tolerate another's point of view if that point of view does not match theirs.
All idealogues are stupid and dangerous, and when they get the reins of power they inevitably destroy the society. These days, there are idealogues on both the left and the right, but the ones on the left are the most vile and the most self-righteous.
I think it was Eisenhower (maybe Truman) who started that mispronunciation. Every president and vice president since has done it. No president ever says things that would tend to discredit his predecessors even when they were idiots.

Well then maybe it would be better if Britain reclaimed their former colony, so they can re-teach the people here how to speak some proper English. I can honestly say that I have never used 'irregardless' or 'you all' or even shorter 'y`all', even though I live in the redneck state of Texas.
Its funny how people born in the US are so adamant about foreigners speaking English well, yet they themselves have no real command of the English language. Still, I guess it is not as bad as 'ebonics'. Whoever came up with that rubbish needs to be beaten over the head with the Oxford dictionary.
Nader, Mckinney, Barr, and Baldwin have all signed the following statement. What do you think it would take to get McBama and the War Party to consider it.

We Agree
Foreign Policy: The Iraq War must end as quickly as possible with removal of all our soldiers from the region. We must initiate the return of our soldiers from around the world, including Korea, Japan, Europe and the entire Middle East. We must cease the war propaganda, threats of a blockade and plans for attacks on Iran, nor should we re-ignite the cold war with Russia over Georgia. We must be willing to talk to all countries and offer friendship and trade and travel to all who are willing. We must take off the table the threat of a nuclear first strike against all nations.
Privacy: We must protect the privacy and civil liberties of all persons under US jurisdiction. We must repeal or radically change the Patriot Act, the Military Commissions Act, and the FISA legislation. We must reject the notion and practice of torture, eliminations of habeas corpus, secret tribunals, and secret prisons. We must deny immunity for corporations that spy willingly on the people for the benefit of the government. We must reject the unitary presidency, the illegal use of signing statements and excessive use of executive orders.
The National Debt: We believe that there should be no increase in the national debt. The burden of debt placed on the next generation is unjust and already threatening our economy and the value of our dollar. We must pay our bills as we go along and not unfairly place this burden on a future generation.
The Federal Reserve: We seek a thorough investigation, evaluation and audit of the Federal Reserve System and its cozy relationships with the banking, corporate, and other financial institutions. The arbitrary power to create money and credit out of thin air behind closed doors for the benefit of commercial interests must be ended. There should be no taxpayer bailouts of corporations and no corporate subsidies. Corporations should be aggressively prosecuted for their crimes and frauds.

Pah. It's all just dialects. It is very easy to mock American dialects, mainly because the media tend to make stereotypes out of them, but every single country has them. They may not be noticeable to people outside the country - for example, I am told that Parisian French sounds very different to the French spoken in the south of the country - but it is there. If people are genuinely voting on who's dialect sounds more educated, I think it's fair to say that the problems are far deeper than corruption or lobbying.
But, would you care to explain exactly how USA energy independence and more drilling are contradictory?
Umm, dunno, maybe because more drilling will only serve to feed the USA's addiction to oil? How does more drilling make the USA energy independent in the long (or short) term?
You are already the highest oil consumers, with about 20bn barrels per day, out of the world's 80bn barrels daily consumption (one quarter!), and you think that tapping into your already dwindling reserves will make any real lasting difference?
Time for renewable energy on a large scale, fast. Thats the way towards energy independence.
More drilling will almost inevitably lead to the postponing of alternative energy investment; build wind turbines, not drilling rigs!

I think you'll have to give them the Doug McArthur treatment - surely you remember how McArthur handled the Japanese at the end of the war.
Just shows how desperate he is - and it appears he's trying to lure David Blindgit back in as well. However, we'll get our chance next year or the year after so let's leave this one for the US election. When it's our turn, I'll stop discussion of American politicians in the UK thread.

Well, even oil execs agree that the best thing to do would be to tax fossil fuels more and use the money to invest in production and development of alternative energy sources - since the production of alternative sources relies so much on fossil fuels, they can't possibly compete without a tax and until the alternatives supply a large part of the energy requirement. Now the big problem with that is that you can't trust a government to put the money where it's meant to go - just look at the $800B+ payola - or if we go back in time 20 years, Ronald Reagan siphoning off retirement funds to pay for his wars.
In the short term, nuclear reactors are a viable alternative to coal-burning plants. Unfortunately the US has not built/developed any civilian power plants for almost 30 years - I'm afraid much of the rest of the nuclear world has far better stuff than we've got. Now doesn't that just fill you with a nice warm fuzzy bluish glow? (And thanks to Cerenkov for explaining why we get such a gorgeous glow.)

Pfff ... when did your politicians ever matter? Let's see... "Let's keep the Nazis happy" Chamberlain. "We need some help here or we'll have our asses handed to us on a silver platter" Churchill. "I'm a puppet of Dubbyah - see what I can do when he's got his fist up my ass" Blair. Gee, where would you guys be if the folks who rejected your pathetic monarchy weren't around to help?
