Sorry, didn't know that (not my area, etc).

Are you saying that he isn't a "Naturally Born U.S. Citizen"?

I don't read it that way.

The way I see it, we're all immigrants to this country. The only ones who really can say their native are the Native Indians and even they migrated long ago.

I myself have roots from Germany, Netherlands, Ireland and Cherokee Indians.. and I was born here in the U.S., does that make me less qualified to be President? Why are people so hung up on that issue, it's a dead topic now!

The point is that constitutionally, a presidential candidate must be a natural born citizen, not an immigrant naturalized citizen. You qualify, Gov. Schwartenegger of Calif. does not. There is a nutcase movement that claims Obama does not qualify.

One halfwit the BBC interviewed in the run-up to the election, a potential voter - I've forgotten the town and State, referred to Obama as an "Ay-rab terrorist". If ignorance is bliss, that person must be the happiest in the world. I'm dead against any form of elitism, but that made me wonder about the wisdom of giving everyone the right to vote.

The big cheese is going to close this thread any moment now.......we're in a race to see who can get in the last word....

One bright light: Upon hearing a similar comment in one of his rallies, McCain said: "No, he's not---he's a good family man with whom I have some major differences." (or words to that effect.....)

The real terrorists are those who attempt to define values and morality for others---in the limit, it is a symptom of insecurity.

Yep, I heard that quote and agree with McCain's statement.
While I was not for Obama I wish him well and hope for the best. He has an insurmountable task in front of him. Truthfully I do not see how anyone could be considered a success over the next four years. They are going to be tough. I hope Obama rises above and does us all good. Having said that .... here is a link to a thread where he is said to already be crawfishing.

crawfishing---that's a new one on me....

Any new president has to make a transition into reality---we could keep score on all our elected leaders, but why??? In the end, we vote for the person who seems most likely to deal with the current reality that he inherits Jan 20.

What is really aggravating is to hear things like: "Joe will raise my taxes, but Jack will not." Guess what: we are all in for some big adjustments. The criteria for leaders can never be so simplistic.

Not your usual post-election commentary.

Subject: Not your usual post-election commentary

The media describes every election as historic, the most important in a generation, etc. When the voting is done they tell us a new era has dawned, that things will change, that nothing will ever be the same, blah, blah, blah.
I don't agree with everything in this commentary, but it reduces much of the hype to manageable levels.

And rickh gets the final word. Thanks everyone for playing.

Parting shot: every single President has made popular promises (remember "Read My Lips...?" - from the other side, but still pertinent). Anyway, good luck to the new President and to the old President and to everyone in the US - only time will tell whether you have voted in a shining light or history's greatest monster.
