Government reports that 51 Million < 49 Million

For example, "Romney has 51 million Votes, which is less than Obama who has 49 Million votes. Therefore Obama wins."

Because of the Electoral College system, it's very possible for a candidate to win the popular vote but lose the election.

Actually it happens in more than just the Electoral College system. We have had a similar thing happen here many times.

The news just come to tv here says Obama 54,000,000, Romney 52,000,000 give or take a couple hundred thou. Sorry to tell you all Obama won fairly and squarely but the naysayers will always pick.

Where did you get those numbers? The closest I've seen to that is 49 million/49.2 million-

As far as I know, the current figures are somewhere around 55.8 million Obama, 54.4 million Rommney.

No textbooks need changing, maths still works just fine. The issue is the electoral collage system.

Even if your 49/51 million result was true or accurate, its not the 1st time a president has won with a minority of votes. Most recently it hapened in 2000, but also in 1888 and 1876. There was also problems in 1796, 1800 and 1824.

The australian preference voting system is completely different to the electoral collage system.

I never said they were the same :rolleyes:. Our preferential system wasn't even in my thoughts. What I am pointing out is that the popular vote, regardless of the system or country, doesn't always equal winning the top job.

Actually its not 2000 years but 2000-12=1988 years.

In 2000, the AlGore/Lieberman combo won 50.9 million to Bush/Cheney's 50.4 million. But the electoral system, chads, jeb declaring texas for his bro got george and dick the presidency.
