security

hi, I wanted to ask people that know good sites and resources to study security related materials such as astalavista to share their knowledge in this thread.

ugenn 11-04-2004 06:10 AM

Firstly, if you're serious about the field of security, you should stop referring to it as " 1337 h4xing".

Good security related material is often found in the subjects which it is derived from. eg Mathematis, Cryptography, Networking, Operating Systems, Computer Architecture etc. So try googling along those lines.

monohouse 11-04-2004 09:27 AM

while we're already on the subject, thanks for the info btw.....

wth is this anyway ?
security is security yes, and how does security differ from that ?

ugenn 11-04-2004 10:07 AM

wth is what?

calling it something silly like 1337 makes one sound like some script kiddie, and thus is avoided by ppl in the security industry.

monohouse 11-04-2004 11:36 AM

I see...........I guess I picked the wrong name for the topic
although........a script kiddie is better than nothing............

let me rephrase the question, what is the ground knowledge required to begin studying security ?
the number of topics you listed here is quite large, but I do believe they have a certain order, which comes first, which requires which and so forth...........

also I would like to ask you how deep is the attention these topics require, which require more and which are not as important as others, maybe you could go into a little more detail on that ?

is a crypto accelerator is a requirement for all security applications ?

acid_kewpie 11-04-2004 11:43 AM

a script kiddie is nothing.

monohouse 11-04-2004 11:44 AM

lol, ok could you just "point" me to the right direction, is astalavista is a good start ?

I've been searching those topics, and I found alote of information, I have no idea where to start, if you could tell me which way is the best start ?

If you are interested in Security, you might want to take a look at the LQ Security forum. -- J.W.

securityfocus.net (bugtraq)
have a strong working knowledge of cryptography, tcp/ip, and programming at the very very least.
astalavista will get you nowhere
altavista and google are your friends

monohouse 11-04-2004 01:49 PM

lol

acid_kewpie 11-04-2004 02:08 PM

it seems as though you think we are coming from an angle where we think we're cooler and better than some skiddie cos we once managed to DDOS mylittlepony.com. we're not. we *know* we're better than skiddies cos we're intelligent, respectful and have NO interest whatsoever in blackhat activity. it is not welcome here in any form. no nods. no winks, no nudge-nudge. we are not interested. it's a misconception that really isn't appreciated.

monohouse 11-04-2004 02:26 PM

so all this 1337 cr#p is a misconception..........strange to hear it, blackhat ?
I know what you mean, it's a shame that people taking these things that way.......

but thanks for clearing this out, im sure many people would like to know how security-minded people would like to be taken
up until now I wasn't quite sure what exactly this is all about, but now it seems to be much clearer than I firstly thought, I guess those number-cr#ps came from those same script kiddies as you call them did they ?

and making the real people look a little different, but obviously that does not affect them.......does it ?

well, I have checked that site, and it looks chool, im gonna read it up for a while, although I would still like to know a good starting point (what subject should I study first ?) because here there is also alot of material here.......

at least now I will know not to use any of that number cr#p anymore ..........
