How not to Fuduntu (was: Want to know how to Fuduntu?)

Fuduntu has a pretty good support structure including our primary website, blog, wiki, forum, and IRC channel.

The best methods to find the information you are seeking is simple, and straight forward.

User documentation - Wiki
Information & News - Blog

Personalized Assistance - Forum

We can also be found actively working on the Fuduntu Linux distribution in the #fuduntu channel on Freenode.

The Fuduntu Team also monitors this sub forum and will respond to questions and comments as time permits. :)

the name confuses me. I see on your wiki it's some Fedora / Ubuntu hybrid, but I immediately saw it as FUD Ubuntu. Yet another Ubuntu fork full of Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt, whatever that might mean. That's what FUD means to me... And now I read it's actaully NOT an Ubuntu fork, that's even more confusing.

The name isn't F.U.D.untu, or FUDuntu, it is Fuduntu. Taking three letters out of the name and implying that they mean something that they don't mean is where your confusion lies. :D

I installed Fuduntu on a whim to "try it for a week"--that was 2 months ago!
Nice work fewt. :)

I thought the same thing, that Fuduntu was based soley on ubuntu because of similarities in spelling. I wasn't planning on trying Fuduntu, However, after reading about what made Fuduntu different, I've already downloaded the Iso, and hoping to find time to give it a whirl.

given all the other pointless respins like edubuntu and xubuntu, you appear to be doing exactly the same thing as them name wise.

As long as it is limited to a similar name, we are doing OK. :)

Hi, Welcome to LQ,

What's your selling point? Advantages over other distros...
I see you're rolling release - Archlinux, Gentoo and some others do that. (Fedora rawhide, althought not always usable)
You claim performance, how?
You ship Gnome 2, I guess that's a speiality.
Screenshot gallery in flash? not pretty... (just my view since flash doesn't work very well on linux)
Finally, what's your goal?Philosophy? (for instance : archlinux KISS, chakra : KISS+KDE, debian : stability, Gentoo modularity... )

IOW : introduce yourself to us, otherwise (at least for me) you'll fall into the category 'another respin'

Sorry if I come across as blunt, but as much as I like diversity, I agree with acid_kewpie that there are a lot of quite pointless respins out there.

Serafean

PS : also may I suggest that you put this kind of information on your wiki, maybe in the about section?

Stability, a traditional desktop, battery life, and performance.

Yep, we are a rolling release. :D

Kernel tuning, and reducing latency with things like tmpfs /tmp and reducing swappiness.

It is indeed.

We know, our webmaster should be re-working it but life has gotten in the way. We ship flash with the distribution though, so not a terrible problem really.

Our goal is to build a stable rolling Linux distribution, and have fun while we do it.

.. but we aren't a respin, we are an independent distribution. I can work up an introduction though, I've done that a few times for other forums. The problem with introductions is that they often become outdated quickly.

Maybe if we were a respin that would apply? ;)

It'll get there eventually, just needs time.

Fewt handles as ton of naysayers about the distro (those who haven't tried it) and the name with terrific graciousness. +1 to him and the entire Fuduntu team for making this an excellent OS!

Honestly, I agree with Serafean. If you're not a respin and don't want people to have that impression, then perhaps a different name would have been in order--especially when you provide precious little information about what you actually are, what makes you different, and why we should be excited about your distro. I mean, we've all seen a ton of the clever, Ubuntuish name amalgamations, and it's getting to the point where enough is enough.

Please don't be offended, I'm sure you guys worked very hard and you may very well have a great distro, but for me, the hybrid name scheme has just gotten to be a bit of a deterrent. Again, I hope no one takes this the wrong way. I'm just being honest.

yonnieboy 05-27-2012 05:42 PM

Gnome2, already like it! Unity and Gnome3 sux! What's in the repo's? Does SeaMonkey work? TB and FF? How about Geda? Will it run on a P4? Since it's got Gnome, does that mean default is the gnome browser, which never has worked worth a damn?

Seriously considering a test drive. I like the idea of a rolling distro, except for when an update breaks everything. How does the team propose to prevent major breakage?

sntnlz 05-31-2012 06:55 PM

Ouch! Too much negativity. You're a good sport fewt. I'll give Fuduntu a test drive on my test laptop and provide informed feedback on the distro's forums when I get a chance to (nothing about the name, I promise). Actually the 64 bit ISO just finished downloading. Welcome to LQ.

Well that proves the point doesn't it? If people presume you are a respin from the Kerrazy bonker hilarious name, you're doing yourself a massive disservice.
