Using 'noapic' to overcome black screen

Hello,

I have recently installed FC6 i386 on my laptop. Unfortunately, having installed the relevant drivers for nVidia for my GeForce Go 7200 card, which I know work, I still get a black screen after start up if I don't supply the 'noapic' kernel argument. This is regardless of booting into runlevels 3 or 5. I am running an i386 kernel rather than x86_64 despite having an AMD Turion 64 bit dual core processor due to problems with Eclipse.

Unfortunately, this noapic command seems to be affecting my USB ports in that some of them will not work.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do to get round this noapic argument e.g. maybe changing Xorg.conf file?

Thanks in advance

Well, posting your xorg.conf file would be a good start as none of us have a crystal ball. LOL

Try booting both ways and compare the logs to see if you can spot the real problem. You may need a BIOS update.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly

Below is my xorg.conf file:

# XOrg configuration created by livna-config-display

Section "Server Layout"
Identifier "DefaultLayout"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
InputDevice "Synaptics" "CorePointer"
EndSection

Section "Files"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules/"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "keyboard0"
Driver "kbd"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "gb"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Synaptics"
Driver "synaptics"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" "True"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection

Please excuse any typos on my part, I have no working USB ports (damn noapic!) and ndiswrapper is not set up so I have no internet connection lol, so that was hand written and then typed up -- please forgive me for not wanting to do the same things with my log files! It may be a while before I can reply quickly to these posts without having internet/usb access to linux.

A note about the BIOS update. I found whilst looking through my dmesg a line:
PCI: BIOS BUG #81[00000000] found
I am guessing that is not good, do you have any idea what may cause this sort of thing?

I have just checked my Xorg.log output and grep'd it for any (WW) warnings:

(WW) No monitor specified for screen "Screen0"
(WW) NVIDIA: No matching Device section for instance (BUS ID PCI:0:10:3)
(WW) NVIDIA(0):
(WW) NVIDIA(0): No modes were requested; the default mode
(WW) NVIDIA(0): "nvidia-auto-select"
(WW) NVIDIA(0): will be used as the requested mode
(WW) NVIDIA(0):
(WW) <defaultpointer>: No Device specified, looking for one...

Can anyone make any sense of that???

By the way, what log files am I meant to be analysing exactly?
