screen-resolution-problem-solved

short version:

if you're having trouble setting screen resolution under FC5, try installing the monitor as a default lcd/crt monitor.

long version:

if you're like me, you have a rather old computer and an even older fairly unusual crt-monitor which (a) isn't recognised and (b) isn't mentioned on the hardware list during configuration.

if you're like me, you've probably clicked on the monitor closest to the one you have. and if you're like me, you must have been surprised to find your desktop resolution set at 800x600 after booting for the first time.

well, no troubles, i thought and went to system config and changed the screen size to 1024x768. i then restarted the x-server (a side note here, is it only my installation of fedora-core5 which doesn't recognise the command 'init'?) and everything stayed in 800x600, without the option under system->preferences to change the resolution up to 1024x768.

this problem was solved by changing the monitor to default CRT 1024x768. and then everything worked! hoorah!

the question is, why wasn't 1024x768 offered as an option despite it being mentioned in /etc/X11/xorg.conf? strange...

now i have to work out how to get pirut to check for software on the cd-images which are stored on my server, rather than it going into the net or to a cd-drive.

about init: did you really try /sbin/init with root privileges?

hold_breal 05-08-2006 03:27 AM

no, i just tried init with root privileges. maybe it isn't in root's $PATH (which i find highly unlikely). i'll have a look...

oops, well, it works now. maybe i'd forgotten to log on as root :)

oh, btw. the monitor which caused the problems was set-up as a highscreen1240e.

have a nice day :)
