The website says the release is due out on the 6th of June. I have been using the development versions and the frequency of updates is slowing down now, so I assume they are on track for a 6th of june release.

You'll have to check on the Fedora Core website for detailed info. Visually its the same as previous releases, but it now uses KDE 3.4 and GNOME 2.10. Some package have been removed from the default distro and put into extra. There are also some improvements on SELINUX.

I've been fooling around with the development version for a couple of weeks, and I've noted a few things -- not exactly new, but new for Fedora:

1) ALSA actually seems to work "out of the box." (But ALSA on FC3 has been gettin fairly frequent updates, too.)
2) The default gcc is version 4, and a lot of FC3 software, written for gcc3, seems to be really sloppy when gcc4 get its teeth into the code.
3) In the development release, Open Office is the Version 2 Beta release. I don't know what's planned for the official release, but 2 Beta works for the few tasks for which I've used it.
4) The "foomatic" printer stuff isn't in the development tree, so I have a problem accessing one Samba printer. (CUPS doesn't have a driver for any "HP OfficeJet" printers.)

This one I'm not sure about: In Thunderbird 1.0.2, the "Show message in new window" function does not work. (But that's most likely something I've done.)

Anyhow, from what I've seen, FC4 looks to be a good incremental improvement on FC3.

Edti:
Re. 2): There is a gcc32 compiler you can install to compile things like mplayer that just won't work with gcc4

Re 4): That was incorrect. foomatic was there, I just failed to configure it properly. My bad.

On the fence

Wow,

Cool to hear that you have the gears turning! Please, when you've used it a bit, let me know what you think. I'm about to jump to Debian.

Have Fun,

LB
