I have a laptop with core 2 duo intel chip with two hard disks, 120 GB each. One have windows vista and in the other I wanted to install fedora 8.0.

I have 4.0 GB ram, nVIDIA Graphics card 256 mb.

I tried to install fedora 8.0 x86_64 which I burnt from the image I downloaded from the site using bit torrent.

There is no error in the installation but when I boot into linux the screen halts at a page saying kernel alive...

and nothing happens after that...

I really do not know whats going on... and I need help.. I am a novice with linux.. just know how to work around a few programs in this OS. and I need to do some urgent work...

hp dv9620? Exact model will help. The message "kernel alive" dosn't mean anything to me. Try selecting "see details" in the graphical boot screen - then watch the messages.

Another thing you may try to get a more meaningful message is to edit the kernel line in grub. By removing the word quiet (normally at the end of the line) you will get a lot more detail when the kernel starts up.
