Problem reading iso files for FC5
 

I have been running FC1 with reasonable success and decided to upgrade to FC5. I downloaded the .iso files for FC5 on my Windows XP machine because it has a CD burner; my Linnux does not. No apparent problem downloading and burning the 5 CDs.

It seems that the Linnux machine does not read or see inside the ISO files. They appear to be large monoliths and not collections of files that can be transferred and installed. Also, the Linnux machine won't from any of the 5 CDs with ISO files even though the BIOS is set to look at CD drive at boot-up.

OK, finally, the questions: Do I need to "unbundle" the iso files before I burn the CD? Can the Linnux machine boot from the ISO files directly or is there some other step needed to prepare a boot CD?

My Linnux machine is (don't laugh) an IBM Aptiva, 350 Mhz Pentium II. Any ideas will be appreciated.

you dont just write the whole of the iso to the cd. iso is an image. you have the option to burn an iso in nero. if not that try alcohol 120%

OK,Thanks for that. It helps to know that the ISO file needs to be read and re-written as something other than it is.

I understand Nero is not for free software. What is alcohol 120% (besides 240 proof vodka...:) ) Is it something that can be run in Linux to decipher and rewrite the ISOs? Actually, since I can only burn CDs on my Windows box, I probably need something to run in windows that ca do the job. Is there anything other than Nero?

Well you say you will be using Windows to burn the cd's from the .iso files. Ive got the latest Nero version and in my experience it doesnt compare to "Deep Burner" of course deep burner has mostly everything Nero can do but i think it handles the burning more stably and effectively. + DB is absaloutely FREE!! use deep burner
there is a free and pro version of course there isnt to much between them both but the free version does the job great.
