Problem install Fedora 4
 

Hello,

I am a total beginner with Linux technology trying to install Fedora Core 4 on a Pentium II 200 mb 20GB.

First question : Is this PC powerfull enough ??

I downloaded the 4 iso files FC4-i386-disc*.iso and wrote the 4 install cd with no error messages and no problems. Downloading under win Xp and burning with Nero.

When I do the test media at the beginning of the install process it Failed!!
Why ??? Can the problem come from the cd drive ???

If I try to install anyway I get an error msg saying that the image file cannot be transfer because the disc is full ... with 20GB ???
Everything on this pc has been reformatted ...

If the test media check failed, it probably means one of the downloaded ISO files is corrupt - you'll need to download the corrupt one again. 20GB should be more than enough - I'm running FC4 on a 10GB disk.

Ok, I will try to download again the cd1, burn it again and retest it ...

I am a bit confused with it because I am downloading often big stuff with DSL connection and basicaly I never get any troubles ...

Why don't you try the DVD iso instead? You might find it less hassle. It's not on the main Fedora site but it's on all the mirrors.

No dvd drive on this pc, it's an old P II ....

I also had the same problem - i've downloaded all cds 3 times, and burned accordingly many cds - check failed every single time (at the end of CD). CDs were recorded by cdrecord on Fedora Core 2.

After that, I just skipped this check and installed FC4 normally (with one set of "bad" installation CDs) - no errors were reported, so you just may try your luck, and hope for the best... And during installation all CDs were required (I selected many packages)...

It's the second set of cd's I burn, I have already a set of cd's FC3. I have been able to make a complete install of FC 3 but some packages were making errors.

I wanted to make a new set of cd's than I took the latest version and now the cd1 is returning an error saying that there is not enough space on the disc ... with 20GB ???

So I will try again but I think the problem is somewehere else because using Win Xp I can explore the cd correctly ...

Thiere is a bug that is noted in the Fedora Core 4 release notes. The CDs are probably fine. Try using this boot prompt:

Maybe if one of the images is corrupt then u will have to check with the check sum. Download the eXpress CheckSum Calculator version 1.0 available on the net for free . Compare the SHA checksum value generated by the checksum calculator with the one given in the redhat website for all the 4 image files . If they are the same then no probs else the image is corrupt and u have to download it again

I think u might have not downloaded the correct checksum tool . XCSC is very simple utility and, for this reason, does not demand any installation utility. Simply unzip all files to any folder and run the executable file (usually, "xcsc.exe"). u will be asked to browse for the file for which u want to calculate the checksum here u must specify the path for the iso image file. This tool normally generates 3 check sum algorithms CRC32 , MD5 and SHA-1. Once calculated check with the SHA-1 algorithms with the ones given in redhat .com.

These are the checksum values to be compared with
FC4-i386-disc1.iso (sha1sum: 3fb2924c8fb8098dbc8260f69824e9c437d28c68)
FC4-i386-disc2.iso (sha1sum: 31fdc2d7a1f1709aa02c9ea5854015645bd69504)
FC4-i386-disc3.iso (sha1sum: 032455cdf457179916be3a739ca16add75b768b7)
FC4-i386-disc4.iso (sha1sum: f560f26a32820143e8286afb188f7c36d905a735)

OK, now I got the right software.
I just tested my 4 .iso files and they are all ok !!

so I do not understand why the linux media test is refusing them ....

but anyway I will try to install again using the boot prompt:

"linux ide=nodma" ( post 8 )

I don't know yet were to enter this prompt because I boot with the cd1 and than I go directly to the graphical install ....
