I followed several guides and How-to's trying to get my NVIDIA drivers working, including this one linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=259917&highlight=nvidia+fedora[/url]
I am able to follow and complete every step in this guide and others, but when I edit my xorg.conf file and try to start Xserver again, I get a black/stand-by screen.
Any suggestions?

Quick solution: If you do not need rhgb, just load the nvidia module in /etc/rc.local
If you have udev >= 032-5, load the nvidia module:
add the following two lines to /etc/rc.local:

rhgb is the Red Hat Graphical Bootsystem (or something like that). If your system boots up in a pretty graphical way, then you do want rhgb.
udev 032-5 is the version of udev. I understand that there are issues with the version that ships with FC3, and so it's wise to upgrade udev using the system-update tool. Any version greater than 032-5 is fine, I believe I have udev 050-something
My understanding of the problem is that the NVIDIA driver tries to create a device in /dev *but* FC3 uses udev, so FC3 doesn't pick up that the NVIDIA devices have been created. The two lines of code that I quoted in my original post fix that issue so that the NVIDIA devices are where they should be with the correct permissions.
Udev is reasonably new and is the preferred way to handle devices when using a 2.6 kernel. However, as always there's some inertia as people learn about it and get comfortable with it. As such, FC3 is the first Fedora to use it in place of the old /dev folder.
My system does not boot up in a graphical way, and I have already tried disabling rhgb in the grub.conf file.
As for my udev version, I let yum completely update my system using yum update, so I should have the latest version, right?
I tried adding those two lines to rc.local as well as typing them in manually as root (as several how to's required me to) but I still experience the same problem.. Thanks for your reply.
Hmmm. You say you're getting a black screen. Does it seem that the X Server still running? Does the screen drop back to a bash prompt after a while, or does the screen just stay black?
If the screen just stays black, does the monitors OSD appear and say that there's no signal to the monitor? Or does it look as if the monitor has switched itself to standby?
Also, have you rebuilt or upgraded the kernel since you installed the nvidia drivers? A kernel upgrade or rebuild would require you to run the nvidia driver install again. This:

is saying that the driver simply isn't there. Could you try running the NVIDIA install again?
The only other thing I've just noticed, is that the very last line of your log file reads:

Is it possible that you have SELINUX set to strict and you're running X as root? While I don't think it's the root of your problems, it probably won't be helping.
hello. I am having the same problem with Centos4 (RHEL4). My log look exactly as the one posted here. The screen goes blank but behind the black screen Xwindows behind seem to be responding (at least to ctrl-alt-backspace). It can be shutdown and restarted with the same result - blank screen.
I found the cause of my problem. I had an inactive monitor plugged into my normal monitor jack, and I had my main monitor in my DVI jack. I removed the inactive on and plugged my main monitor into the normal monitor jack. I then formatted and followed one of the tutorials and everything worked fine. The NVIDIA splash screen only showed for a split second tho. Good luck.
