"Long mode error" when Installing 32 bit FC5 on AMD Athlon XP 2200+

Hi

I am attempting to install Fedora Core 5 on a PC with an AMD Athlon XP 2200+.

I acquired the 1386 32 bit DVD distro but when attempting to install with the GUI it crashes to a black screen saying

"Your CPU does not support long mode. Use a 32 bit distribution".

This is my first ever Linux install so it may be something simple but the CPU is 32-bit and the version I have is 32 bit (I bought it online from pcdiscs.co.uk

Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong?

Thanks
Graham

This error is common when you have to wrong version for your arch type. Although I have only seen this when you try to put a 64bit version on 32 bit. Maybe you need the i586 version. Can you down load a new iso?

hope this brings clarity to your situation!

Hi, I am another newcomer suffering the same problem. I have tried the i586 version, but still get the same error message. the linux I am trying is mandriva 2007 as supplied with the linux magazine in november 2006. Also my pc is clean, ie; no operating system installed.

I'm sorry to say I never got a solution, mate. I've bought a new motherboard/processor but don't have it up and running yet.
