Linux student

Hi
I am a nontraditional age student trying to learn Linux. Our class text is "The Complete Guide to Linux System Administration" by Nicholas Wells. I am trying to get Linux loaded from the CDs that came with the book. It is FC2. I am installing an a Dell Dimension 3000. I added a second HD for Linux. After the installation I reboot as directed. I goes through almost to the end when it says: dhcppc1 login: Window manager error: Unable to open X display :1
I went back through it in interactive mode and found the following error message:

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":1.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining

Traceback (most recent call last):

File "usr/share/firstboot/firstboot.by", line 200, in ?
import forstbootWindow
File "usr/share/firstboot.firstbootWindow.py", line 28,in ?
import gtk
File "usr/src/build/375621-i386/install/usr/lib/python2.3/
site-packages/gtk-2.0/gtk/__init__.py", line 43, in ?

RuntimeError: Could not open display

Does anyone have any ideas on getting this system up and at 'em? Thanks in advance.
Al

Welcome to LQ

If you are doing this in class the easiest way to get an answer might be to ask the teacher.
This is not the best place to ask your question as this forum is dedicated to intros, basically just saying "hi, I'm here". I'll ask the mods to move your question to fedora/installation to give it a better chance of getting answered.

Moved: This thread is more suitable in Fedora-Installation and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves.

Installation help

Unfortunately, the teacher doesn't seem to know. Without assistance, I guess I'll have to give up.

Looks like it's not picking up the correct video settings. Can you post up your video card type and your xorg.conf file please.

The video card is embedded on the motherboard. It shows that it is the Intel 865.

The full xorg.conf is:

Hi Al,
I noticed in the inital post that it is trying to import "import forstbootWindow" in line 200.
If you can boot into text mode try typing gedit usr/share/firstboot/firstboot.by and see where it calls for forstboot and correct it to firstboot, that could be the whole problem. If not, if you have the bandwidth and a CD Burner get FC4 and try installing that. One other thing you could try is Googleing the fatal IO error.
