Please forgive my ignorance but i am havin some difficulty runnin programs i just installed.
for example im tryin to install pure-ftp. i dl the tar.gz file i unzip it and install it. but i have no idea where and how to execute the program? im using Fedora4
thanks for your time and patients.
Sorry... I have never used Fedora core, but I believe it uses Yum to install programs (it is possible to install from archives like the tar.gz one you have got, but it will almost certainly be easier to use a package management system). Here is a tutorial on how to use Yum and rpm's that I have found (not sure how good it is as I haven't yet looked at it...) http://www.fedorafaq.org/#installsoftware. I also saw this, this is how to get software, may be useful for the future. http://www.fedorafaq.org/#getsoftware.
I hope this helps anyway,
Tom
thanks for the prompt response fellas....i must of not been clear enough on my first post. sorry. i am bale to install the programs fine...my question is where in the Gnome GUI will the application reside? under Applications>Intrenet? i drop the menu down and i do not find any programs that i just installed...? i do find the programs that came with Fedora 4 but non that i just installed..
once again thank you. sorry if im a complete noob...heh! gotta start somewhere...heh
If you compiled from source, then it is unlikely that it will apear in the menu. Plus things like servers don't tend to appear in the menu's. What are you trying to do now that you have pure-ftp installed (I asume this is an ftp server)?
wow i hate feelin like a noob....i think im getting the hang of it.... ok i noticed that it tries to startup when i reboot. its says process FAIL so i figure that i need to edit some sort of config file to correct the settings? now my question is where in the world is that file hehehe!? thanks again fellas!
I haven't ever used pure-ftp so I'm not sure, but I would suggest maybe reading the documentation here: http://www.pureftpd.org/documentation.shtml. Sorry I can't be any more of a help
No worries, if you run into more problems with pure-ftp it might be worth setting up a new thread or just search here (someone might already have asked the same question).
