Install FEdora Core 3 over Fedorda Core 2
I have an install of Fedora Core 2.
Can I save the settings from FC2 to FC3? |
what settings do you want to save

Not a whole lot: my dial up info and Firefox install plus any things I put in the taskbar on the current install.. that sort of thing. What is your advice on hanging onto the install of Mepis that I have? The Live cd install was really handy. Plus it allows a quick setup of a dual boot using Grub and Qtparted. But I have not been able to get past what to do about having kppp work. I have to make a symbolic link (symlink) at every bootup. My experience with Linux us very weak. I don't have many tasks to do. I but I sure can find the bugs in stuff that nobody can or will give the answers for. |
A lot of settings are stored in your /home/user folder under hidden folders that start with . where user is your user name. I'm not sure about dial up settings. An update shouldn't touch your /home/user directory. As for other things, if you really don't want to lose them, you'll have to find out where the config file is and save is somewhere safe and then restore it after update.

Thanks for responding.
Is it called something like... _config_ then? Interesting that you quote Negus. I didn't find his book very helpful. Installing software is another weak area for me... things that pretty much do themselves in Windows. So I haven't gotten as close to making the switch as I'd like to have for the time spent. I keep plugging away though. |
Specific settings for different applications and such are in hidden folders. If you are using nautilus, you need to make hidden files visible, this under the view menu.
It took me a while to figure out how to install software, but now that I know how to, it's easy. Do some reading on rpms and yum. I find it hard to believe that you didn't find Negus' book useful; it gave me a great start. We're talking about the Red Hat/Fedora Bible, right? I hope this helps, please ask if you have anymore questions. |
