GRUB won't load after install

Hi everyone,

First of all, here the relevant specs of my PC: Asus A8N-SLI-Deluxe, Athlon XP 3500+, nVidia 6600GT running on PCI Express 16x, Seagate 7200.7 200GB on nVidia CK804 ADMA Controller, Maxtor 120GB and Seagate 80GB on nVidia CK804 PATA controller. Fedora Core 3 is installed in the Maxtor 120GB drive. The Fedora Core 3 CD's passed the media checks, the ISO's also lined up perfectly with the MD5sum.

First of all, I attempted to install Fedora Core 3 x64 using the graphical install, but that didn't work. All I got was a screen 3/4 full of green lines. The X server did start without any reported problems, though. Anyway, I went ahead and did a text install and that went ahead without incident. I chose for GRUB to be installed on the hard disk and not on the MBR, because I'm using Acronis OS Loader to dual-boot.

The PC rebooted and I chose Linux from the Acronis OS Loader. It thinks for a bit, and then I get a screen that says GRUB _ with the _ cursor flashing. That's all. I've left it for 10 minutes and it's still like that. I then used the Fedora Core CD to enter rescue mode and check out grub.conf and device.map, both we're fine. I tried grub-install --recheck /dev/hda and that confirmed that everything was good.

So I'm a bit lost. I thought about just using LILO instead, but it doesn't seem to be present in Fedora Core 3.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had a problem like that the message was something like:

GRUB loading stage2.......................

and it hung there. All I did was add a few more gigs to the partition, which makes it 10 GB (not sure if it was needed), I formatted the partition, and did a custom install. After that it just worked...im a n00b so i dont know anythign else i may have changed...

Realityescapear, I have exactly the same problem as you, i ended doing a text install, fitting an old pci graphics card to install but then when grub had finished, the screen just went black (wrong resolution methinks by default for my S3 8MB pci card.

To date I haven't had it working with my Asus 6600GT card.

All help greatly appreciated, especially if anyone knows how to allow my old pci card to carry on all the way through, when i will be able to install the linux drivers for the 6600 gt

Hi,

I'm facing the same issue. I have and A8N-SLI Deluxe with a 6600GT video card. Did a text install without problem. Then grub is hanging on reboot. Anyone been successful with this?

Thanks,
Whitney

well there are at least 2 issues here.....I use mdk but who cares

1) the graphics card has to have a driver with your distro to get a nice picture.......some fallback to vesa or framebuffer (fb) try rebooting and see what vga setting you can choice and TEXT install nearly always uses a basic vga driver

2) your sata may not be enabled in the kernel......mdk 10.1 is brill at detecting mine so see if its the sata drive that is the issue.

3) to the original poster I am guessing you did not choose to install grub to MBR otherwise acronis a bootloader would not appear.....try to install to mbr next time....grub will be overwritten to mbr

4) and ATI driver support is pathetic....sorry but its improving so make your card a basic one first with shirty graphics and then go to ati and get the closed source code......I had to do the same but for nvidia
