Graphics Problems

When I was first installing FC3, I was unable to due to my graphics completely bombing out and the system crashing every time it started an X server. This happened when I finally got it installed (in text mode) too. I put it down to hardware, as I was using an i810 graphics chip, and I now have a new comp, on which it works fine.
Just out of curiosity... any ideas what could have caused it?

You know I'd give you one if I could... but all that happens is that the screen goes pin-striped and everything dies in the background.

Pin stripes? video device unable to display at the current refresh rate with that resolution.
