Fedota Help - Telnet connection refused

I have installed Fedora Core 1 and it had all updates installed. I am trying to use telnet and have not had any success yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Supporting information below:

[[root@linora root]# chkconfig --list telnet
telnet on
[root@linora root]# service xinetd restart
Stopping xinetd: [ OK ]
Starting xinetd: [ OK ]
[root@linora root]# su - oracle
[oracle@linora oracle]$ telnet linora
Trying 192.168.8.40...
telnet: connect to address 192.168.8.40: Connection refused
[oracle@linora oracle]$

Thx, Ira

On the host machine , linora , have you added an entry into your /etc/hosts.allow file for the the client machine ?

The entry should look like :

in.telnetd : <IP address>

I created the entry as follows (still getting the same error msg):

#
# hosts.allow This file describes the names of the hosts which are
# allowed to use the local INET services, as decided
# by the '/usr/sbin/tcpd' server.
#
in.telnetd: 192.168.8.40

Is this the correct syntax? Is there a problem in my trying to telnet to the same box that I am on? Do I need to create a port assignment (such as 23)?

Zulfilee,

Can you please be more specific on 'service iptables down'. I turned off the firewall through the GUI controls but am still getting the same error.

Thx

Ok i`ll try to be brief

First open a console and type the following

ntsysv
[here check if telnet is checked on [or check it on]there. cause in checkconfig you`ve not specified the runlevels]

then type the following

service ipchains stop [not needed but still do it]

service iptables stop
[ I have not tried it in GUI]
service xinetd restart

service network restart

Note: If this works check on iptables --list to see the firewall configuration .
Just post the list here in this forum to find out a way to change it.

Cheers

OK then , if that is the case , you should also be adding the local loop back address off 127.0.0.1
( you should also have 127.0.0.1 in your hosts.allow file )

EG
in.telnetd: 192.168.8.40 , 127.0.0.1

You can also use a shorthand version of

in.telnetd: 192.168.8. , 127.0.0.1
