Fedora software raid 1

Can you help me??

I have problem with fedora software raid, I make partitions software raid hda1 (70GB) and 1 GB hda2 on first drive and hdb1(70GB) and 1 gB on hdb2, then make raid 1 partition /md0 from hda1 and hdb1 (ext3 /) and /md1 from hda2 and hdb2 (swap).
I install system and everything goes ok.

But when I switch of secondary disk (hdb) I can't start system, I can only see GRUB on my monitor and beep, beep, beep im my speaker etc

Maby somebody know how to solve this problem.

I do no if I cant help you. Im planning to do a Fedora installation next week and Im setuping up some Raid devices on 4 250GB SATA disks. I was told that in Fedora Core 1, you can setup the raid devices in the installation process (can you confirm?), although I dont really remember seeing RAID questions in the Fedora Core 1 installation process.

If I understood exactly what you described, it seems a mbr boot record related issue. The only suggestion I have is that you use LILO instead of GRUB, because LILO automatically does some configuration tasks regarding RAID setups that grubs does not (e.g. installing boot loader on the mbr of all hdd's of the raid device). Hope it helps.

By now, maybe you have already found the answers you need. Can you please give me some feedback on the installation process of RAID + Fedora Core ? Was it easy? What are the main issues I have to be carefull?

Thanx

Hello

I have already solve the problem. When you use software raid on fedora or other linux you should install boot loader on both devices. I made boot loader with GRUB without any problems, and everything goes OK. I make little test switching off one disk, and all work correctly..

If you will have any problems, write to me (nwachnicki@post.pl) I will try to help you ;-)

Thx/Norbul

How to instal the boot loader in the other disk?

I already did the raid 1 setup in my server with fedora core2....

I used the grub loader... i was making some tests in order to review it....

Whenever i boot with the disk identified as Master by the BIOS when i installed it... it works pretty nice.... but then when i connected my slave disk and reconfigured the jumper it didn't....

I assume that the Linux loader is not installed in the second disk... how can i set it up??? The thing is that the only way i can boot the machine is with both disks and they already work as raid and i can only see them as /dev/md0

As i read you already solve that

Thanks

You should not use more that one drive per ide cable.

Two reasons.

1) Performance takes quiet a hit.
2) If one drive on a cable fails it will take the whole cable out till you remove the faulty drive.

Hope this helps.
