Fedora Install with NVIDIA

I've got a new machine with on-board NVIDIA graphics.

Before I even try, I was wondering if Fedora comes with some sort of generic video driver that will let me install and do the initial setup. I know that to get all the bells and whistles I have to download a driver from NVIDIA . However since I don't do anything fancy I was just wondering if I could get by with a plain vanilla driver from the installation CD.

Thanks for the help.

Fedora has a built in driver for nvidia based cards called "nv". It doesn't perform as good as the driver from nvidia but if you are not using any 3d stuff it works ok.

Just as a side note, nVIDIA is a pain to install in Fedora, at least it was for me anyway. With the standard NV driver with Fedora, don't expect anything in terms of 3D graphics or even screensavers in some cases.

However, all is not lost:

Quote:
From Fedora Core Unofficial FAQ
Q: How do I enable 3D support for my nVidia graphics card in Fedora Core 3?
A: There are now nVidia driver RPMs provided by livna.org that are designed especially for Fedora. If you're using yum, and you're using my yum.conf, you should be able to install the drivers easily:

1. Open a Terminal.
2. Become root.
3. Type:

yum install nvidia-glx kernel-module-nvidia-`(uname -r)`

That installs the nVidia driver for your current kernel.

Ok, thanks for the feedback. I think I'll wait until FC4 comes out "any day now" before I give it a try.

FC4 is out on the 6th of June. I don't think installing the nvidia drivers from the nvidia website is difficult. All you need to do is make sure that you have the kernel-devel package installed.
