The Fedora wallpaper then appears and the machine freezes. Mouse pointer disappears and keyboard locks up.

I've had very similar problems on my box, with the excpetion that I run a dual head config with the 3DFX card as my secondary monitor. When I first do "startx" everything is fine (including being able to move cursor over both windows), but as soon as a pop a window (of any kind) on the Voodoo monitor, I get a hard lock - same as deepblue. I suspect that the Fedora splash screen popping up on his monitor is doing the same thing.
My fix for this has been to edit "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" and change the driver from "tdfx" to "vesa". Everything is fine then...
