I'm trying to install Fedora Core 2 on a SATA-drive. As the CD boots and the install program starts it loads drivers. The system hangs totaly on loading ata_piix. Is there a way to get around this? I have the exact same problem with the Suse9.1 install. Please advice...
i had the same problem. i have 2 SATA drives connected to the mobo. I've tried both RAID enabled and disabled. ended up just putting a PATA drive, worked fine. it's likely just unsupported software/hardware in linux....

In your bios, you should have the option to switch your SATA setup to use "Legacy" support, 'Enhanced" support and one other kind of support (I forget the name).
Try toggling this support. "Legacy" seems to work for some setups. I had luck with "Enhanced" support with an Intel ICH5R chipset, where I had two disks and mirrored the disks using the MD driver.
I have now left Fedora out of it and went on with Suse9.1. Some BIOS-fixes and a small drivers disc from ASUS made the SATA-discs and drivers work. Now there is a new issue. YaST before getting to the settings of the install. Soon I'll leave SATAs behind and go back to good old RH9
