Fedora 8 rescue

I had a fedora 8 installed .fedora was installed in sda6.grub was installed on sda. I added a new 500gb hard drive with three new partitions and os windows xp.

i tried to rescue the grub but i had a bios problem with sdb6 .I typed 'grub-install --rescue /dev/sda' and got the device map as
(fd0) /dev/fd0
(hd0) /dev/sda
(hd1) /dev/sdb
then with the command
grub-install /dev/sda
i came out and restarted the system. Now i get error 18 of grub. Neither my windows is loading nor fedora
what do i do?

1) fedora is no longer 8 pls get the latest

2) which grub are you using...grub-legacy or grub2?

3) right now...does your hard drive show a grub prompt or a grub-rescue prompt?

seeing as there has been no support for fedora 8 , since it hit "End Of Life " in Dec. 2008

install the current "fedora 14 "

if what you are seeing is
Code:
grub>>
then you moved things around with the added drive
reorderd cables ? probably

it has been years since i used the fedora 8 rescue ( install dvd or the first cd - 1 of 6 )
google reinstalling grub and write it down on paper the instructions ( like this part "find /boot/grub/stage ")
http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/GRUB
and believe it or not but the ArchLinux page is very good
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB
http://www.unixmen.com/linux-tutoria...reinstall-grub

then pop in the dvd and after you run " chroot /mnt/sysimage"
reinstall grub

or undo what you did with the hdd cables
