fedora 2 and java
 

I have tried to find java on my new fedora installation but can't see it. I don't think it is installed. Is that correct?

Should i go to the java rte site and download and run an rpm?
Or should i

yum install java

or something like that?

I want java as i believe 1 it is handy to have at the systems disposal and 2 i want to be able to do things like stream video using opera web browser and i think it is necessary.

Java is one of those third-party softwares that isn't installed by Fedora... For some [legal, copyright/patent, ethical, ?] reason. Just like MP3 support. So, it's prob'ly not on a yum repository, either.

I just downloaded the package from Sun. You get an .RPM.BIN file... You need to change the permissions to make it executable, execute it ("./j2re*.rpm.bin"), and it will run through the license info, then spit-out the RPM. Install that, and you should be golden.

I am trying to get used to the idea of keeping abreast of my packages using yum. If i use yum usually but occasionally start sticking things in using manually installed rpms will my system stop being covered by the yum dependency checking?

I don't know if yum reads the RPM database or not. Either way, yum will be able to update any package from the original install, or installed later by yum.

If you are manually installing third-party packages, they prob'ly won't be on the repos anyway. Good third-party packages are made to be satisfied by original packages.

If yum ever complains that it can't update a package because a third-party package depends on it, check the website where you got the third-party package for an updated version.
