Fedora 15 with a custom kernel
This is my first post on this website, I hope I am posting this in the rite forum.
I installed FC15 DVD on Acer machine, Installation went perfectly fine. FC15 came with a 2.6.38.6-26 kernel, But I want to move to 3.0.4 version, So here are the steps that I followed 1. Downloaded 3.0.4 kernel source code from kernel.org 2. make defconfig 3. make 4. make modules_install 5. make install 6. Modified /boot/grub/menu.lst 7. Rebooted machine, selected 3.0.4 kernel, But it didn't boot. 8. Rebooted machine with 2.6.38 kernel, Recompiled the 3.0.4 kernel with .config of 2.6.38 kernel Repeat steps 3-7, I am able to boot 3.0.4 kernel. I will like to know If the steps that I followed are standard ? Or is their any better way to install a customer kenel. Thanks |
You could always read the Fedora documentation. Alternatively, you can just get the latest pre-built kernel for Fedora 16 or Fedora 17, so you don't lose all the Fedora patches.

My question is still not answered, What is wrong in the steps that I followed ? what is the advantage of following steps mentioned in FC documentation
|
With your steps,
- you are not running the Fedora kernel config - you do not have Fedora kernel patches applied - you are not building an rpm - you are not tracking your kernel in the rpm database - you can not easily back-out a kernel using yum - you are bypassing the maximum number of kernels installed - you may have problems with some Fedora-built software depending on the Fedora kernel config/patches - you will always have to recreate problems using a Fedora kernel to report an issue There are probably more things to consider, but these are the issues that come to mind immediately. |
Fedor Fifteen (15) isn't in stalled even tho Screen Congratulates User as successful.
I'm new to Linux Questions.
My first question tries to report that after 3 attempts to successfully install Fedora 15 I have failed. At each attempt at installing Fedora 15---at the final installation screen--- I read: "Congratulations! You have successfully installed Fedora 15. Reboot to activate the installation." I press the reboot button in the lower right hand corner. But no Desktop screen appears. ?The machine appears to be restarting. But the only screen which appears reads "Grub Grub" The word "Tab" appears below "Grub Grub". I click on TAB and a number of what I believe are command words which would be used at a terminal. I don't understand whether a sophisticated Linux Fedora 15 user would know how to deal with this strange screen. It happens that I have seen the opening Desktop screen of Fedora Fifteen (15) and it has never appeared on my computer. Thank you for any proffered help and guidance. William |

Unintentional hijacking
It's unclear to me whether you are telling me that there is a site within Linux Questions whose subject is something like "Trouble Installing Fedora" ---or even "Trouble Installing Fedora 15." I'll search for such, or similar Thread title. Meantime I read the paper on How to ask good questions. Thanks much |
